A friend has just acquired a large machinist's lathe with the old controls well stripped out of it. My thought is to replace the old hard wired controls (many of which are missing) with an AC drive unit. Anyone have any experience converting over a unit to this type of set up??? If so, what unit is a cost effective, basic drive...I don't need all the bells and whistles, just a good, simple, reliable unit.

The machine is 3 phase and we have already built the rotary phase converter which runs the motor well.

Thanks for all your input.

David

Try these sites for the actual drives:
www.dealerselectric.com/FM100.html
www.automationdirect.com/store/Shopping/Catalog/Drives

Also, you'll find a ton of good information at the following message board:

www.practicalmachinist.com

Look for the section dedicated to VFD's

You didn't state what size motor you're running, but from my experience in industry, Square D makes one of the best drives available. They're easy to set up run forever with no problems, etc.
The smaller ones will run around $300.
Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hello David,,

I would suggest an AC Variable speed drive. A friend has one on his lathe and it works better than you can believe. He feeds in 230 volts, single phase and gets three phase power out to the motor. He's able to control the speed as well as direction of the motor from the VS drive control box. In my opinion, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.. They're a little spendy but well worth it.
