I live in a hilly, heavy wooded area and mow 1-2 acres. I have a 6hp. mower with the large wheels in the back. Because of the hidden rocks that just seem to pop up from nowhere I get about 5 years out of one of these machines and maybe 2 years on the blade. The one I have now is giving me some problems. I cant seem to keep running without hitting the prime bubble. I have cleaned the carburetor and tank. The mower runs good for about 15-20 minutes then the rpm fluctuate and it stalls. Hit the prime bubble and it will keep running for a little while put any load on it and stalls. The plug is a nice tan color, spark is good and the fuel supply has been changed. Any ideal on what is going on with the mower? Also I am think on picking up one of those string mowers. Anyone have one and how well does work?

Just a shot in the dark, but the next time it stalls loosen the fuel cap and see if that allows it to run. The tank may not be venting properly.

I go along with T_Bone on this one. Carb is gummed/plugged up or dirty air cleaner.

Hi PJW,

You will also want to rebuild the carb as the main jet is getting plugged up or the pump diafram is weak.

Any chance it's overheating? Check the cooling fins and shielding, also it might be running lean. String trimmer would work okay but the cut is kind of ragged and mowing an acre or two would be a long hard exercise. Maybe a couple of sheep?
