Exhaust Manifold Removal

I need to remove an exhaust manifold form a Ford F-250 with a 400 ci engine. The bolts holding the manifold to the head are extremely tight, possibly frozen. I do not want to break them off. What should I do? I do not think heating them will be effective because of the way the manifold and head is configured. Should I use an impact wrench, breaker bar, etc. Thanks for your help.

As a mechanic, I have removed hundreds of these bolts and screws. It is inevedable that some will break, but this is what I do: With a good 6 point socket, work the bolt-nut back and forth just a small amount at a time. After the head is free, try to get liquid wrench on the stud and let it go to the threads. This is time consuming, just be patient. If a stud or bolt breads, I remove the heads and drill out the studs and then re-tap. You may have to go one size bigger with the NEW bolts. In my opinion, this is a very Stupid design that Ford thought was a "Better Idea". They have had this design for years. I have tried heat with very limited results with the head removed. Just heat the bolt screw area RED hot and let cool completely. GOOD LUCK.

Try running the engine and getting the heads, etc. hot and see if you can loosen them. A bit of dry ice held to the bolt might help also. :-)

Well if there are nuts on studs, cut the nuts off. Then run a die down the studs to clean them up before putting them back on. If you decide to just crank on them and hope, if they are capscrews, maybe before twisting them off it would be better to drill the heads off. This would leave you with something to work with, to tap on, to grab with vise grips, to heat, cool, etc. With the manifold off there would be no pressure on the remaining studs sticking out and you would have room to work.

I agree with wdtom, drive it a couple miles to heat it and use his method, dont forget welding gloves and use Gibbs penetrating oil.
