Saw a set of Blue Point combination wrenches at a pawn shop...they were the open end/box end type and looked really similar to their Snap On counterpart...what's the story behind these and are they worth buying for some serious late summer shop work?

I like em shiney. Course i'm a Hollywood type & like showy things. On my combines & tractors anything i can unbolt, gets chrome plated. My bill at the platers last month was over 12,000. Oh & the snap ons i got from Bob Lowry real nice.

I've got some that I bought in the 70s' and have never had any problem with them...just not as 'purty' as Snap-On but they are easier on your hands because they are thicker and more rounded. :-)

Most times (but not all), you'll find the Blue-Point name on tools Snap-On has outsourced from other manufacturers, such as snap-ring pliers and the like. I have Blue-Point snap-ring pliers that are identical to K-D pliers I've seen. I think Snap-On purchased them from K-D, badges them as Blue-Point, and then resells them. I think they've done similar things with their lower-budget Blue-Point air tools. It's pretty common to find a tool identical to a Blue-Point wearing another name brand. I agree with Revredneck - for daily use in a professional environment, Snap-On hand tools can't be beat.

Justin,
I have been a mechanic for over 25 years now and my favorite tool brand is Snap-On. They are very expensive, but worth it if you have to depend on them every day. The Blue Point line is the "economy" version of Snap-On. They are a good line of tools. I have several of them myself, and have never had any trouble with them. If the price is good for that set you saw, buy them. You won't be disappointed.
Good Luck and God Bless,
Tommy

Thanks everyone for the comments..just to let you know I went ahead and purchased the set $50 for 5/16 through 7/8 combo wrenches..didn't figure I could even get a half decent new set for much less than this...only thing I see with them is some pitting in the steel...didn't buy them to look at anyhow...now bring on the tractors and combines...thanks again for the help
