I have heard that even small amounts of moisture ( humid air) is detrimental to some low hydrogen electrodes, but what about electrodes such as 6011 and 7014. I have some that are old and weld well, but have been in a humid environment. Flux is still tight, but kind of has a chalky coating on it. Are these rods damaged, or just need baked in the oven, will they still produce a good quality weld. They seem to weld consistently.

You only need to worry about Lo-Hy rods really. The moisture problem is getting Hydrogen (H2O) in the flux making it, I guess< Hi-Hy.

I believe the "cure" would be 350 degrees for 8 hours.

Hi Jon,

You will need to heat the electrods too 250*f for several hours depending on the mositer content.

6011 and 7014 are rated at 50%rh so they do not have to be completly dry. If your having difficulty welding with them then I'd suggest building a small rod oven.

A metal enclosure with a 100w lite bulb will do. Watch the cardboard rod container boxs tho.

usually when a rod has drawn moisture, its hard to strike an arc with it, and when you do get it going it wants to stick. just bake them in an oven for about 15 minutes and theyll weld like a new one
