I have a Maasdam power pull, had it for close to thirty years...of all the small cable hoists I've had thru the years, it has to be the best... it is still out in the shop and still works as good as it did the day I bought it. I also have one of those big 'ol jobs like T_Bone and Va Tom describe and bought it at a sale somewhere...but...I used it on a heavy job a couple of times and couldn't trust the damned thing...it would miss hooking on the spool teeth and run backwards. I lubed it but maybe it needs a new spring. I'll admit...they're right...it's heavy duty...you got to be a horse to handle it and for the price of a new one...you could probably buy several Maasdam power pulls. By the way...what does it cost new? L8R....Fred OH

We used to use one in the mining industry that was a cable type with a reversible ratchet and spool unit. IT was a Caddilac brand called the "Little Mule hoist" was available in 1 ton and 2 ton sizes, haven't heard from them in a long time, Wonder if they are still manufactured? Gene Davis

Dad has one, I've got 2. Better than anything Taiwan ever thought about exporting. We broke Dad's trying to pull a stump. Got a new spool, still works 20 years later.
I was tickled to death when I found them on the shelf at Home Depot and Lowes.

Hi Chris,

Compare yours with this type. This type will not jam the cable on the spool, well less liky too than the other types.

A very heavy duty come-along!

This is a nice looking puller. I noticed it does not have a cable tensioner on it (plate that applies tension on the spool) to keep the cable flat and tight. Does this seem to affect it's useability any? I know there have been plenty of times I wanted to rip that plate off my cheapie puller.

Hi Skinner,

I've been using my Wyeth-Scott for 5+ years so it's nowhere near as pretty as those pictures. It's done everything I asked, including placing 6x10x16' oak beams on top of a second floor. That's when you look at those fingers and feel real secure that the load won't come down unexpectedly.

That plate you're talking about was always an aggravation on the cheapies I once used. You need to have a little tension on the Wyeth-Scott to get it to re-spool smoothly. One foot on the cable works for me.

I have found that it's possible to get the cable on the wrong side of the fingers while un-spooling if you're going too fast. Easy to avoid. Once you decide to spring for one of these beauties, you'll never go back. A delight to use, if not carry around. And they NEVER need rebending or adjusting.

Hi Skinner,

Like Tom said, best puller since sliced bread.

As long as you never kink the cable, I've never had a problem with the spool wire nesting but they do need a small tension upon roll up. They wind smooth accross the spool.

I have a old 4-ton about 25yrs old, that I used to pull out my Dodge PW, about 9000lbs stuck in the mud. I had forgot to take my snatch block and it saved my tussie.

Ya, Tom we know where to get quality :)

I think it is one of the best available. My oldest one- more than 20 years- had a problem, so I called the phone number that they put on the new ones. Turns out that mine had older style spring that had been replaced with redesign. They sent me 2 of the new springs. I recently bought a new one of theirs and junked a Taiwan model.

I had (have) one. Worked great until I overloaded it and the drum the cable wraps on crushed into many pieces. It is cast aluminum. My fault for overloading, but you gotta do what you gotta do when loading old tractor at night and you don't have anything else. Guess the difference is if I overload one of the cheapies, something bends that I can fix later. This catastrophic failure made this one parts.

You can buy replacement spools. They're not real expensive. We sell Maasdam, and Allied pullers. Maasdam is by far the better of the two.

Hi Robert,

Next time you might want to try something you'll have trouble breaking. The Wyeth-Scott has a handle that fails before you can hurt the cast iron housing. When I first saw one of these, I knew it was the answer to my dreams, after many straightenings of the cheapies. Bailey's, the logging accessories co., sold mine to me.

Have three of them. Costly but well worth the extra money.
