Woods RM-59 mower

The belt broke on my Woods RM-59 mower recently ...usually lasts 3 or 4 years, thats okay, but the last new one I got was $68...about 4 years ago. Was wondering what you RM-59 users are paying for yours...my source seemed kinda high and are out of business now...and a location to purchase one in southern Ohio would be terrific. Thanks...L8R....Fred OH

Just bought one from a local tractor shop. $60 for the Woods. Monroe, Ohio (south western Ohio)
Be sure to notice the model number before buying. Mine is a RM-59-3, it makes a difference in the belts.

stay with the woods belt
I used to live at Sharpsburg, Ohio. I have a International Cub with a Woods 59 belly mower that was for a Kubota. The spindles and blades are backwards for a cub. Modified the mounts and crossed the belt to get proper rotation. The original Woods belt lasted over 15 years. Long enough to wear the top of the center pulley to where it broke from being thin. I changed pulleys and went with a Bates industrial belt about 30 from a distributor in Parkersburg. Belt lasted less than 1/2 hour (30 min)!! Thought I had an alignment problem with new pully realigned the pulley and installed new Bates belt another 30+ got about 40 minutes. Grass getting tall!! realinged one more time and new Bates belt 30+ now have over 100 in new belts. got about 37 minutes bad belt. Gave aprox 70 to Woods dealer for new belt it lasted a couple of years before my son learning to drive the tractor broke it by popping clutch one to many times while mowing pond grass about 20-28 inches tall. Woods belts in my experience last and others will not take the load. KEEP in mind that this outfit has the belt crossed and has a extra full twist in the belt, BELT GETS HOT

I just bought an industrial-type belt for my RM500. It was a Gates Super HC 5V1000 (100" length). Costs about $25 at the local bearing and chain industrial supply. Don't know how it will hold up yet, but worth a try with Woods being $50 and up. This is a "wedge" type belt (5V) and is quite common in industrial apps. I looked up a 160" and it is in the $40 range.

Gee Guys, I buy my belts by size and length- a 5/8 x 58" for my mower is $12.00 and change at Farm & Fleet- and it gets worse- a 1/2 x 70" for the "real" lawnmower is about $8.00. Belts are MAGAM and are Taiwanese. Toughest belts I ever used. I get two years on the 72" mower and 1 on the 48".Been using them ten years. Now I even keep spares around. BTW, prices have been moving around in the last year, up, down up, never back to the low. Buy now. Hope this helps.

Jim,

I tried that! I went to our local farm store (Farm King), NAPA, and several other automotive stores. The problem is the LENGTH--my belt was (I believe) over 150" long. They had PLENTY of shorter ones, and a few longer, but none near the exact length needed. I'm sure the OEM belt is fine, but I ALWAYS try to go less expensive first.

Fred,

That seems about right. I just bought one about a month ago for my L-59 belly mower on my 2N Ford for around $70. I was shocked by the high price. I usually try to buy my belts from NAPA, but they didn't have one the right size.
