knew what she wanted and needed when she went shopping, had a card with families sizes, fabric yardages etc in her purse. Have you ever found youself standing in the store,by a display wondering which sawzall blades worked so good, what size belt/disk does your sander take,is that grinder a 4" or 4.5",I went thru the shop and made 2 lists over the weekend.
List 1,Brand/Model/Size of each tool and what size/type of belt, disk, bit, blade, stone it takes and/or I prefer.Typed it up,shrunk it on copier to "wallet size",laminated it and put it in my wallet.
List2:Just what is needed-well worn bits/blades/stones,belts,screwdrivers,misc tools.
This list folded in back of wallet, cross off as aquired.
Hope to spend a little less time wondering and more time wandering in the tool section.Of course the drooling is still a problem.Wonder if Sears/Homer Depot/Etc would pay ya in tools/goodies fer workin there?

JDK,

I'm with you, but I kinda took it a step farther.

I got sick and tired of Post-It notes and crumpled up pieces of paper in my truck, and bought a cheap PDA, a Palm V.

I've got all of my rigs, tools, tractors, mowers, etc listed in it with year, make model, S/N, belt sizes, plugs and everything else I can think of. On the main page I have listings for the stores I go to (TLC, Lowes, Depot, True value, etc) and when I need to get something I enter it on my computer and download it to my PDA. Walk into the store, pull up the listing and go nuts. Sure does simplify matters on my monthly visit to the big city!

Another nice thing about PDA's, other than the phone listings and everything else, is that I can download pages directly from the web if I need to do some comparison shopping.

I was looking for a BBQ Grill last week and downloaded the test results from Consumer Reports. I had the ratings, model numbers, prices and the pros and cons of every tested BBQ in their mag. Sure makes things easier!

Granted it may seem a little high-tech, but I don't know how I lived without it 2 years ago. Without the color screen and with a small memory package you can pick one up a office supply store for under $75.00.

My nickels worth,

Scott

I do the same thing. I have every car truck tractor and tool in my palm. I keep a list of what I need by store. It beats post it notes.

Good idea. I have a small white board in the shop. When I use something up, I write it on the board. Then, when I'm going shopping, I try to remember to check the board for what's on the list.

A corner of this board is also used to record mileage/hours since last oil changes on vehicles/equipment. This way, the information is all in one place.

I sure do agree with the white board idea. I have a list with all my equipment including model numbers, tire sizes, last oil change/grease. It keeps me on my toes as to what needs to be done. The things that stay on for a long time are done with permanent ink. If I get rid of something, some alcohol can take those numbers right off.

No, they won't pay you in tools, etc., but you can cash your paycheck and buy stuff with your employee discount!
