I have a Stihl Model FS 74, Serial Number 2274178 weed whacker that runs great up until today. The drive shaft broke off at the motor end. The shaft appears to be a spring construction with a square machined on each end. I would guess the working end has a gear with a female adapter to let the square end enter. The shaft slide out of the machine tube without any problem. Once I get the star socket head cap screws that hold the protective housing on it looks like I could weld or setscrew on a square adapter onto the broken end of the drive shaft. Has anyone tried to repair one of these shafts? I will check to see if a new shaft is readily available at a reasonable cost but the machine is at least ten years old and parts may be hard to come by. Also does anyone know where I can get wrenches for these blasted star socket cap screws?

Just about all weed whackers use the flexible driveshafts, even the straight shaft ones. They provide some shock absorption capacity if you are using a brush blade or heavy string. Plus the little two stroke engine isn't the smoothest to start with.

These driveshafts break all the time and you should be able to get a replacement part at the dealer. Cost will be $25.00 or so. Don't try to bugger a fix onto the old shaft -- it won't hold.

Home Depot sells Torx drivers that will fit the socket head cap screws. Or any good hardware store or auto parts place.

While you are at the dealership buying a new driveshaft, ask them for a torx scrench. Or buy a T27 torx T-handle driver.
Did you get a tool kit with the trimmer when you bought it? There's usually a cheap driver in the tool pouch.
