Had my HS graduate son pick up some tubes of grease at the farm store today - he was reading the label, and noted that it said LITHIUM. He correctly pointed out that lithium is a metal. So his question: What form is the lithium in lithium grease? I have a degree in chemistry, and I didn't have an answer! Anyone with experience in the lubrication industry?

Most soaps use active metals in their manufacture. Potassium and Sodium being more common. Think about lye soap, just cook Sodium Hydroxide and fat, and you get "pure and natural" lye soap.

As Tbone notes, it refers to the metallic soap used to hold the oils in place. The oil is the lubricant, but the particular metallic soap determines many of the characteristics of the grease. The particular oil may vary also.

Hi Ray,

The term Lithium Grease can be slightly misleading as the lithium content is actually the thickener used to thicken the oil content to make it a grease as opposed to an oil.

It comes from the lithium oxide salts or lithium castor soap and is added in about 8% in content.

Good thing I ran into this a couple months ago or I wouldn't have known :)
