Is there still a source for the original single chain, non-spool Come Along? I have one that I use that is marked: "COME ALONG, J.E. SCHAFFER CO., TULSA OKLA.", and would like to find another. It's the simplest heavy duty tool I've ever seen. Thanks for your help.

Are you talking about a "differential chain hoist"? These are great for lifting. Ain't worth a hoot for horizontal applications. Try also: Northern Tool. Ed

Everything SCHAFFER made was heavy heavy duty. I have a JE SCHAFFER chisel plow that stands up to black dirt regardless how much moisture is in the ground. I have ripped mesquite stumps up with it that I couldn't see. I didn't know they made come alongs, but I am sure they are good quality.

Try Harbor Freight (.com, or store)
they might have something...

Hi Rauville,

You mean these? I use two CM's, a 1 1/2 ton and a 3 ton. Great tools, if heavy to drag around.

What I have does not have a rachet, but instead "pushes" and "locks" the chain one link at a time with each throw of the lever. You anchor directly to the chain that you are using to pull with, rather than to the body of the puller. You are really pulling from both ends of the chain, and dropping a loop of slack chain as you pull. Apparently these were made before the term "COME ALONG" became public domain. Thanks

Seen one on ebay just like you described. Dern thing sold for $82.00. First one I have seen since late 70's.
