I've been successfully using AT&T intercoms (728A) that use the AC wiring to connect my shops to the house, 750' up the hill. They worked great until recently. I always have at least one spare unit available as they are also my back-up security, after a couple of burglary attempts. The sound actuated systems worked great. Alarm goes off and the intercom turns itself on. In addition, my wife appreciates the communication availability.

Just recently the system has had a huge amount of static, on all of the three frequencies, at least that's what I assume the A, B, and C channels are. Today I tried, unsuccessfully, with 4 units to get the system operating as in the past. With units in the same building, they work, barely. When in separate buildings, no go. I can't believe I have 3 bad units. As I have a house that isn't radio transmission friendly (copper clad), I don't want to try that type intercoms. Any ideas?

Either that or the neighbors have some RF device on a close frequency.

VaTom, using a battery powered AM radio you should hear the noise(static). Start by turning off breakers one at a time and see if the static goes away. If it does then start turning off things on that circuit. If static is still there after turning off all breakers your power company's equipment may be at fault. Give them a call. Good luck Mac(TX)

Is it possible that you have an arcing connection or bad fluorescent ballast or other noise source that is generating noise that is present in the AC wiring? This could be in the building at either end or in the interconnecting cable. I'd suggest opening breakers to isolate circuits or using a battery powered radio tuned to a weak AM radio station near the lower end of the band as a noise locator.

What if you open the main breakers in the shop to kill any possible noise source there, then try to get 2 units working in the house?
