My neighbor bought a brand new Lincoln XR8 Welder last summer. Since then, it has been in the shop 4 times and each time it there for 3 or 4 weeks. Maybe someone here can help diagnose the problem.

Sometimes it welds fine, but then sometimes the rod just sparkles and will not weld, just like a bad ground. All the connections have been checked and if your turn the machine off then restart it then it "might" be fine. Very difficult to reproduce. The last two times it went to the service center they said they welded all day with it and never had a problem. We got it back and welded for 2 hours then it quit welding. They promised him a new machine last time but they since backed out. Anyone know about this model machine?

Hey Richard, I'm not all that familiar with the Lincoln your talking about, but it sounds like you may have a problem in the electric circuit feeding the welder, especially since it seems to work at the repair shop. Have you tried taking it somewhere else besides the repair shop and trying it there for yourself ? We had a problem last year with our Millermatic 250 MIG machine acting up. I realize ours is a MIG and yours is a stick machine, but the problem sounds sorta similar. I checked the voltage to the machine at various times when it was acting up and when it wasn't and found the voltage to be varying by more than 20 volts to the low side every time it acted up. Not much change in the input, voltage wise, but after going through the transformer it made a huge difference in the output. We contacted the power company and they discovered problems both with the transformer (it started warming up after we used the welder for a while and the output would drop off), as well as the feeder cable to the shop had been run with 4/0 cable halfway down the run and then stepped down to a smaller cable for the rest of the run. Both things were contributing to the problem, and the power company wound up replacing both the transformer and the feeder cable to correct the problem.
Good luck on finding your problem. I hope this helps you some.
