One of my neighbors convinced to pour 1 gallon of clorox down my water well. He says that he does his about every 6 months or so. Does it really do any good or harm to the well and what about drinking it. My shower smelled like pure clorox.

We just recently had a new well drilled for a new house and our water quality test came up with high levels of ammonia, nitrates, and maganese. Has anyone out there ever had ammonia in their water? AND is it harmful.... We also were told to use bleach to clean out plumbing, etc.

Water is much better now. I let it sit over night then flushed by topping off the swimming pool and a little yard watering. You all are right, much easier to spend $20 having a water sample done once per year. My well had perfect water for the first month then it started bringing up a lot of iron and H2S. I added a softner with chlorinator and a 2 micron filter which allows the iron to oxidize and the filter then removes it. Every once in awhile, if the water in my shop isn't used often, then I'll have the rotton egg smell but not bad and only for a second or two. My well is 176' deep, static water level is 60' and pump is set at 90'. Most of my neighbors don't have this problem although hard water is common, and they have wells at 100' or less. Driller probably figured the second sand was better water, evidently not, but logic would make you thing the deeper you go the better water you get right?

we live in northern minnesota
we dump about 6 gallons of bleach down our well once a year.
our county extension office prints a procedure on how to do.
our well is 145ft and has been in for 22 years.
same pump.
when it comes to water and health issues please contact the proper people. advice is cheap, free, and could give you a belly ache.

If a pump has been pulled, the well has been flooded or other well work has been done, than chlorinating the well makes sense. If work has not been done recently you will have to deal with smelly, cloudy, potetailly dangerous water (if chlorine concetration is too high). Why not have the water tested to see if it's contaminated with bacteria. If it is contaminated, than pouring chlorox down the well will only stop the bacteria that there now, not what will enter the well in the future. You may need to add a uv lamp to treat the water on a contnuing basis. Yearly water quality testing would be ideal. Bottom line is, a yearly chlorination of a well doesnt make much sense, unless you just like the smell.

I recall that Clorox used to have instructions for well disinfection on the bottle. I guess the product liability lawyers put a stop to that.

If you google on "Clorox well disinfect" you'll get about a thousand hits. I didn't see anything that warned against this procedure.

Here's what the EPA says about disinfecting your well:

I'd check with the local health dept. They should have instructions for doing wells in your area (sanitizing them, like the other post said).

If they don't have info, check with local plumbers or pump riggers who work for folks with their own wells.

Richard, follow Ray's directions, I have been doing that for years, and it does make your water taste and smell better.

I do the same thing at least once a year. Let the clorox stand in the well for a couple of hours and then open all the outlets in the house and run water until you smell the bleach, shut off all the taps and let the bleach water stand in the pipes for 12-24 hours. This will sanitize the piping as well.

Yes Rich , Do as Ray and well driller say. What they say is exactly what the near by water testing lab told me to do. Then , useing a garden hose , pump the well down in order to get rid of the clorine.

All new wells will show trace ecoli bactera and the bleach used will cure it, also after a very wet spring wells will stand a good chance of a positive test. As the others said let stand in the pipes as long as possible, drain from an outside tap or the septic tank bateria will die also.

Mr. Well Driller, have you ever had a problem removing a submersible pump from a well where Clorox was used? I heard of a neighbor who used Clorox and when the time came to pull the pump the corrosive effects of the bleach had it stuck so tight they had to bring in the heavy equipment to get it out.
