I do a few small projects. Most are in spots that the ready mix truck can't get to. This next job has 54' of footer. With some good labor I figure it is 24 mixes in a 5 cubic foot mixer. Any of you out there got an opinion. Georgia buggy won't go, a pump is too darn much $$$.

when i drove concrete truck, and we couldnt get in there with a truck, then theyd use a georgia buggy. when they couldnt do that, they wheeld it in. i dont advise usin your own bag mix. usuall every other bag is all gravel, so you dont get a good strong mix. besides, the driver can bring extra chutes with him so he can shoot a good ways.

Mike, Unless I missed something, but we use to wheelbarrow most ALL of the room additions, out buildings, shops, etc. You mentioned "good help", after you get the hang of it wheel'n aint that bad. Contractor size, atleast 3 is good (+3good hlpr), tires aired, goes ok. You dont have to fill to the rim either. Heck, we use to wheel all the other materials needed, dirt, sand, block, mud, whatever. You didnt mention the ground terrian conditions your up against, so actually I could be wasting your time. So I'll say Good Luck to ya.

Well, when I was a kid, I saw my dad mix and pour all the concrete for a 35 x 60 barn. Foot thick walls, floors, stansions, even the manger. That looked an awful lot like work! You probably can't match the price of ready mix, even if you don't consider your labor. There's gotta be some way to transport the concrete from wherever the readymix truck can get to to your building site. Have you considered a 3pt hitch PTO powered concrete mixer on the back of a tractor for transport purposes? One other plus, If you mix concrete in small batches, you'll have places where the concrete isn't continuous - seams between batches!

Hi Mike,

I've built two concrete houses so far, another's started. We often use a loader bucket to transport concrete. In your situation I would have gotten the backhoe to transport the concrete while it was there, unless you hand dug that footing. Even my compact tractor bucket has often been pressed into service.

When I first got started here I compared costs of ready-mix to what I would pay for the material. By buying tractor trailer loads I could realize $10/yd savings. Doesn't leave much for labor and mixer. Time for the ready-mix.

I'm with you about pumping. Around here it works out to about $700 a pop. And then you get crappy looking concrete from the solids separation. I bought an antique crane just to pick up concrete buckets for high pours and inaccessible spots. Here, this would be a lot cheaper than pumping too, even with the crane rental, assuming you can rent a bucket. Once we used an all-terrain forklift to hoist a concrete bucket to the top of 15' walls. Worked out OK. Cost was under $200 for the day.

If you can get your hands on a loader, that's the answer. Is the rest of your project going to be made out of bug food?

Good luck.

Have you considered a bobcat? They are a little more manuverable than georgia buggies, and faster too. Just a thought..
