Radio Shack has a couple of models of weather radio including one which runs on 115 v with battery backup. I bought one which strictly is battery powered and if left on continuously, uses up batteries in 4 or 5 days. I only turn it on when I want a weather report or am concerned about severe weather. In case of a severe watch or warning in my area, it sounds out a loud tone for 8 seconds and then reads out the notice. In reference to another note here, the weather service (www.nws.noaa.gov) has a full run down on station locations, special geographic codes to load into your radio for area specific warnings, etc. HTH (hope this helps). Here in northern ILLinois we can buy weather radio's from our Farm Bureau agency. If I remember right they are $49.95.--Binder-Man

I just ordered the one below for our nightstand. You didn't say what type, but this one is a clock radio type for the table.

Radio Shack is probably the best place. They have one now that you program a county code into it and it will alarm when there is a severe alert for that county.

Uniden.com has factory refurbished units at it's site. Bought one with the auto weather alert, AM/FM and basic 100ch scanner. Comes on by it's self with local weather alerts and scanner keeps track of some of the local events that isn't on the 800mhz digital or encryted analog systems.

Years ago I got one from Radio Shack called a Weather Cube (I think that was the name). Worked real well till I moved to an area where the broadcasts weren't available, so make sure there is a transmitter in the area.

A call to your nearest NWS office can confirm whether there is weather radio available in your area. Most of the country is covered, except possibly for some remoter areas, and areas where radio reception is questionable anyway, for reasons of terrain, etc. You might keep your eyes open at flea markets, and garage sales too. Often find those radios there. Many times a few dollars will get you one.
