Hi I have another well question. I have the old style tank (no bladder) and the tanks will hold pressure in the 45 to 50 psi range when shut off but when running the pressure holds at about 25lb and the pump never shuts of when running the tank is about 1/2 full of water why wont it shut or is this normal I think it used to cycle but its be a long time

I had a similar problem. It was a bad foot valve. The pump couldn't keep up with the water draining back through the foot valve, so it just ran continuously. Could also be a crack in the piping going down into the well.

Hi Rod,

Your describing a couple different problems. A bad gauge could be why.

What I would do is shut the system off, drain the pressure tank, and install another gauge.

The top of the tank has a 1/4"pipe plug that needs to be removed to drain the tank.

Let the system pressure back-up then see what you get. See if the pump will cycle correctly, if not post back and we'll go from there.

If the tank is short-cycling, it's water logged. Two things you can do. 1. Add air to the tank. 2. Shut the pump off, drain the tank completely, turn the pump back on. I recommend two.

Rod, I would expect it to cycle. Sounds to me like the pressure isn't getting up high enough to trigger shutoff. I'd be looking for causes of low pressure. I also don't trust water pressure gages that have been in service a while - might want to be sure the gage is good too.

It sounds like your pump may be worn out. I have seen the small copper tube running from the tank to the pressure switch and gauge plug up with corrosion and the pressure never get to the switch and gauge though, that is is you have a small tube running to them.
