rod not sure what you mean small job. but if you never poured concrete it looks easy till you do it
not sure where your at but pour in early morn.if your by your self id pour it a little wetter.ask the cement co. to add a sack of concrete per yard of concrete. if its real hot where your at have the co. add a retarder to the mix. that wiil help you with set time. good luck

Just an additional note on this topic. It helps to place a moisture barrier (plastic, usually) between your project and the soil. This accomplishes two things. It will prevent moisture from coming back up through your project after it cures (sweating), and also prevents the water used in mixing being "sucked" out by the earth, causing it (concrete) to dry too quickly. The plant where I work bags dry concrete mix, and 95% of complaints we have Concerning low strength are directly linked to customers putting too much water in the mix. While a wet mix is easier to work with, too much water will cause the cement to "wash away" with the finishing process.

If you mean "working it" as placing the concrete and screeding then you have less than an hour to get that done. If you are referring to finishing work then yes you have a couple hours.
After it hardens try to keep it moist for a few days.

The time will probably be less than 3 hours. In addition, concrete cures by hydration- a reaction with water. Once it dries to the point where hydration stops, hydration will never start again. After the concrete has cured to the point where water will not damage the surface finish- just a few hours- keeping it wet continuously will greatly increase the ultimate strength of the concrete. The stated strength of concrete is based on a 28 day wet cure. Drying the concrete quickly may result in only half the strength.
