I have a question, I have a natural gas fireplace and in the last 2 years have used 800 cu/ft of gas. How much propane would I have used (lbs or gallons). I am paying $10 a month just to have gas service plus the cost of the gas. How long would 100# cylinders of propane last?
Any conversion numbers would be appreciated.
Thanks
paul

The "standard" btu value quoted for natural gas is 1000 per cubic foot. If you have used 800 cubic feet in the past two years, this is about 800,000 btu. Propane has about 91,547 btu per gallon. The btu equivalent of your natural gas usage is about 9 gallons. A gallon of propane weights about 4.24 pounds. This information came from the following web site:

You should be aware that natural gas meters sometimes register slow (or not at all) under a low load. Your actual gas usage may have been higher than you think. Gas logs typically use about 30,000 btu per hour (or more) at high setting. This means that you would use use 30 cu. ft. per hour. Are you only burning your fireplace about 13 hours per year?? You also need to remember that a "conversion kit" is needed if you switch to propane. Unless smaller orifices are installed, your gas logs will put out a 3 foot flame.
