I will have to split my Farmall A to change the ring grear. Need ideas for a stand to hold the tractor on. I do not have a shop or a welder.
Do you know of web site or company(s) that sales stands, or someone with plans I can build one? Thanks RL

There is an ad in The Hook magazine for splitting stands for Farmall M-450 tractors. Phone # is 937-368-2304

I'm not a Farmall person, so I don't know what if any modification would be necessary to get them to work or not. Shouldn't be that much difference I would think.

RL, there are a very nice set of plans (measured drawings and instructions) for a two-part stand for this in one of the IH manuals for the Farmall A. If I recall correctly, it was either in the general service manual or the clutch repair manual. I believe I've also seen them posted here in the past on the Farmall discussion board. BTW, it is important to block (with wooden wedges) the front axle pivot point so that the entire front half of the tractor doesn't flip over on you. Good luck. Glenn

I had the same problem and went the cheap and easy route. I bought some 4 x 4's at home depot and cut them into 18" lengths. I stacked them under the tractor, 2 one way the two the other until I had the height I needed, along with a 2x4 and what ever else was needed for the final shim under the bellhousing. Don't forget to block under the drawbar before you pull it apart or it can flip right on over on you!!!

I used an engine hoist to move the front away from the rear.

Keep about 6" or more between the 2 when you stack them so you have a stable base. When you are done they are handy to have around for chalking wheels and many other things.

Years ago, I would split a tractor by putting long bolts in the place the short bolts were located. Then if you block up the engine, the rear would slide back and you would have enough foom to take out a flywheel or whatever.

I've split Farmall A's by blocking up the back half under the torque tube and picking the whole front end off with an engine lift.

A while back, one of the Ford 8N gurus, Marv Baumann, had a article that showed using a tongue jack from a trailer bolted to an angle. The angle was bolted to the back half of the tractor and it was simple wheeled back. You can block the front with 4 X 4's. I split a couple of tractors using one of these two wheeled carts that you can convert to a 4 wheel truck, put some boards across it and blocked it up to the back half of the tractor. Could wheel the back end rearward. (Hope that makes sense).

Use an automotive jack stand with rubber on the top to prevent sliding.
