VERY fine threads -- HELP!

I'm in need of a tap and die set that includes extremely fine threads -- much finer than NF. I mess with old guns, and the thread pitch is very fine. I know about NC and NF, plus metric, but what would I call threads finer than NF? These are guns from the early 1900s, so I assume the screws in them are American-made. Any advice on what these super-fine threads are called, as well as who sells taps and dies for same? Thanks for any advice.

For "special" threads always check a MSC catalog. Search for them, think they will send a free catalog and you will be amazed. It is about 4000 pages of machine tools, tooling, and equipment. Worth getting even if you have found your tap already.

Threads that are finer than NF are NEF or national extra fine. Also some threads might not be a standard thread.

If your gonna mess with guns, a great hobby BTW, then you have to get the Brownells catalog. www.brownells.com Also consider getting or borrowing or seeing if your local library has any books on gunsmithing. There are websites devoted to gunsmithing too. On the smaller taps and dies they go to gauge diameter and threads per inch- for instance- 6-48 and 8-40 are two very common screw sizes on many guns. Get a thread gauge and learn how to use it. Don't attempt to convert to a NF screw. Better get those books, and learn how to grind a screwdriver to fit first of all. Read the parts of the books on tooling and taking apart/putting together first. Learn how to use a punch and screw driver before you start tearing things up. Have fun!

Thanks, Bret. You exposed me to a "Well, duh!" moment. I already had Brownell's bookmarked, but I don't visit the site too often because it doesn't offer a lot of the gun parts I need. But, of course, it has the taps, dies, etc., I'm looking for. Thanks for the reminder.

Hi rossow,

You need to buy a book called

Advanced Gunsmithing, W.F. Vickery, about $20 out of print.

This will teach you all you need to know about making your own parts for any type of gun including, barrels, receivers, screws, dies, taps, springs, hardening, tempering, etc:

This is a one book that tells all that anyone can easy understand.
