Hi Brian, Here in central Va, east of the Blue Ridge, a typical 300' well goes for $2500-3000, plus pump and hookup. West of the mountains, 30 miles away, it's a whole different story due to much more difficult geology. Drillers from there don't change their pricing for this side of the mountains. One recently charged nearby friends nearly $9,000 for 400', hooked up. Guaranteed water flow used to be common here but we had a several year drought. As it's over, maybe guaranteed water will return IF competition increases. I wasn't thrilled with the guarantee, 1 gpm, and went looking for a drilling rig to buy. We have stone to go through and I figured one of the old cable rigs that slooooowly pound their way through would be cheap enough to buy for my brief use. What I found was a small trailer mounted rotary rig with a hammer that cost what one hole in the ground would have cost, used, from a guy who'd unsuccessfully tried to get into the drilling business. I have to rent a large air compressor to make it work. I briefly thought of drilling for others but don't enjoy it all that much. Plan now is to drill two more wells here and send it along to a new home. In all probability I'll make a substantial profit on the resale and get 3 wells thrown in. Not knowing your capabilities, free time, or geology, I wouldn't suggest your buying a rig, but it sure worked out fine for me, after I looked into it carefully. Good luck.
