Table saw woes......

A few weeks ago we had a pretty good wind storm blow through and it took down an out building. My table saw was exposed to the elements a few days and had formed a fairly bad case of surface rust. I moved it to another building and wire brushed it down. I pretty sure it permanently discolored. Instead of the bright shiny steel its not got dark splotches all over it. Problem is the surface rust keeps trying to come back. The slides are the worst. You have to run them back and forth a few times to get them to move freely. Is the something I can treat the deck with to stop this?

Errin, there is also a treatment for cast iron surfaces that uses talcum powder. Supposedly, you use the powder on the bare iron and it draws out the moisture (cast iron is porous). After several applications (rub it on lightly and wait a day -- then clean it off and do it again), you can try one of the sealing methods already mentioned here. BTW, Grizzly Tools may have something on this on their website. I heard about it from a Grizzly table saw owner who got instructions from them. Good luck. Glenn

I use a product called rustlick 631 available from Enco. I spray it on, wait about 5 minutes and rub down the whole thing with scotchbrite. The wipe off the brown gunk and recoat with 631. Works for me.

I have found that a silicone spray keeps mine from risting frim himidity,of which there is a lot here, R.I., in the summer. For a case like you describe I might clean it as well as I could, then oil it, let the oil soak in, then de oil it with dry sawdust. The oil that soaked in may keep the rust from comming out again and cleaning with sawdust will keep the oil from getting on any wood you are cutting. They try the silicone treatment. Makes the table slipery too.

About once a year, I sand my table with automotive paper, like 220 or 320 grit. Clean and wipe. Then some good automotive wax. The dark splotches will stay, but it should keep the rust away.
