Hello Looking for a replacement tank for a compressor I just got. Its a 80gal(apx)horizontal tank. I would like to replace it with a Vertical tank. The current tank doesn't leak but it was built in 1941. When I got it I drained about 5 gallons of water from it. The compressor works fine is VERY quiet and does pump it up to 180 psi. When I picked it up the guy I got it from had it pumped up. I think he was shocked as much as I how much water came out of it. Must not have been drained since 1950. I called a couple of replacement tank makers and they want $500.00 to $800.00 for just the tank. Kinda doesn't make sence to spend that kinda money on a 62 year old compressor. I can buy a whole new 2stage 80 gal at the local air tool store for $850.00. any Ideas? Propane tank? do they run the risk of corosion from the inside like air tank?

Thanks
John

You did say 180 psi!! That's almost ridiculous and risky !! Why would you allow it to pump that high ?there is no air tool or reason to have that much pressure you risk rupturing the tank or hoses and someone is going to get hurt.

Yes I did say 180 psi. He had it pumped up befor I got there. We bleed all of the air out (lots of air) then drained it. A whole bunch of water came out then some with oil floating around in it.

I bet the walls of the tank are at least 1/4 of a inch thick. If you tap it with something metal it sounds like you are tapping on a welding tank (maybe not but thick)

It has two inspection plugs in it. I will start hitting them with the PB Blaster and try to open them up.

Thanks for the replies

Many tanks run at 180 (like mine for
example).

As long as the tank was designed for
it, and most 80's are.

At 180, versus 135, you get like 30% more air,
or something like that.

Grainger has replacement tanks. My inclination would be to just use it as is- keep it drained. Most likely any leak that develops would be a pinhole- discard the tank if that happens. Most likely the pump will wear out before the tank fails- if you use it regularly.

I'd keep using the tank too until it develops a leak. I have successfully used a 100lb. LPG tank for a replacement several times over the years this way. Insure tank is empty, remove the valve (3/4" NPT threads), install a close nipple, a tee, then plumb the pump to one side and the hose fitting to the other. I drilled and tapped a port for a drain valve last.
