I recently had a friend talk with me about opening a Re-Tool Franchise. I think there are only 8 or 9 open at this time. Re-Tool is a store that sells, buys, trades, and consigns new and used tools (seems like it is mostly hand tools and power tools). What are some opinions of this type of store? Is there a demand? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Ron.

As with anything, there is a market-just how big and how profitable is the question.

My opinion would be that in these days of relative prosperity and relatively low tool prices, you would have to really price the used tools low to sell to compete. I would wonder if you could generate enough profit to make it go. I think, at least in today's economy, most would by new over used.

Just my opinion.

I don't see why you would need a franchise. The only one to benefit from that would be the person selling the franchises. I have been to these stores. Seems like they want about new price for old junk. They have some old obscure equipment that is hard to find but other than that I have found no reason to return to a store that only sells outdated stuff for new price. It is not like they have reinvented the wheel or have some great new product. It is simply a used tool store. A glorified rummage sale.

Durn, Ed, ya done burst my bubble. I was hoping that would be a source for some old S-K tools at a decent price. I'd gladly pay what you have to give for the crapola Craftsman puts out these days for an honest-to-gosh quality tool, no matter how old.
