I grew up with mechanics tools on the farm and added woodworking tools later. Son gave me an Original Leatherman a couple years ago and I have yet to find a practical use for this tool. What are they good for? (besides laying in a drawer)?

I think I see the problem here. Take a look at it and you'll see that one end is hinged. If you pull the other end apart it will open and you'll find all the tools people are talking about. Even turns into a pair of pliers, which are real handy around the farm.

Good luck with your Leatherman.

I was a professional firefighter in a large city for a number of years. Carried the Gerber version everyday that I worked on my belt. You'd be surprised what that thing was used for..... ....

breaking windows, cutting seatbelts, prying doors, cutting rope, etc..... ....

Like the guy said, it won't do a lot of jobs real good, but will do a lot of jobs. Saves tooth and nail, these days when it seems most guys don't even carry a pocket knife. John in Nebraska

I have an origonal which rides around in the pickup. I carry the newer Wave with me all the time and it gets used several times a day. Today it was used to pop open the covers on some floor plugs, remove a chrome cover to show someone that there was a washout plug behind it, carve a bit of a paint run off a cabinet door corner. Carry it and you will find many uses. As mentioned it does not do the job as well as a dedicated tool but it is much easier to carry.

I also have a Micra which is used mostly to dig out splinters, cut off tags for my wife, and to tighten the screw on my glasses. Today it also cut off the hunk of dead skin around a nasty blister I got last saturday.

Depends on your lifestyle and way of working. If you're out & about the yard and carrying it,you'll start using it.If your someone who prefers to take everything back to the shop to do minor repairs etc,you prolly won't.My belt sheath either has my Leatherman or my Buck knife in it depending where I'm going and what I'm up to.Kinda like"what shoes to wear".2nd Multi-tool(copy of LM)lives in the glove box of my Tk.

Start carrying it - It'll do a lot of things for you - perhaps not as well as the toolbox full of good tools, but it'll get you by where you're not by your toolbox! Spend a few minutes looking at the various`parts of the Leatherman - they've put a suprising number of things in there. Start carrying it, you'll see.

Put it on your belt and wear it. You're not always near a toolbox when you need a screwdriver or a pair of pliers. You will be amazed at how many times you reach for it during a day. They won't do everything your regular hand tools will but they will do a lot. I've been carrying one for about 8 years now. (I've worn out 2 of them) I feel naked without it.

Same here. And the wife always has a Leatherman moel equiped with the wine cork screw and scissors in her purse. Mighty fine tool that has saved the day on the road, hunting, fishing many times. Will never purchase a folding knife/tool that doesn't lock open.

Hi dick,

These guys are right on. I miss placed mine a month ago and really didn't realize just how much I use it. I really like it when fishing and camping.

Once you carry one for awhile, you'll wonder why you didn't start sooner.

One thing is for sure..... if you don't have it with you, you will never use it.

I have worn out several over the last 6 years. Everything from digging out splinters to filing the points on the lawn mower when it quits running a couple hundred yards from the shop. (I hate to walk)
