How can you temper a spring if the hook breaks off and you heat it to bend a new hook so that you can reuse it?

I have just heated and bent them and left that way...unless you're stressing the spring to maximum...it should be okay. Have you tried this method? Anyway...the spring would have to be heated uniformally to a dull cherry red (very evenly and very carefully) and quenched in a light oil. Hit or miss thing. Best to leave the heat treatment alone...if possible. L8R....Fred OH

I've done the same as Fred many times and have never had a problem. I use the point of the Bernz-O-Matic flame and try to heat just the very end of the spring where I make the new loop.
