I am looking for the company that makes a neat tool for making metal scrollwork. I saw an ad a short while ago for this tool and now cannot remember where or what the name of it was. It will bend flat stock up to about a 1/2" wide? and rod up to about 1/4"? dia. If anyone knows what i am asking about please e-mail or respond here. Thanks much.

Look in this forum. Somewhere in the first three pages there is a long discussion on tubing and flatstock benders.

Hossfeld was the name in iron bending...medium sized bender with tons of attachments for different jobs (including scroll work) My book from them says it will bend 5/8" round or square or double that if heated...recalled from memory. Everyone else seemed to copy from them. The place you are looking for is in Idaho, I think, although Harbor Freight sells a similar one. Probably best to buy the cheapest one you can...as they are really simple to construct...and after seeing one...you can make the one you want. L8R....Fred OH

Harbor Freight Tools also sells many metalwooking tools, such as benders you are talking about, at very reasonable prices, evwn less than Northern Tools,& at lower prices. They are online, I believe Harborfreight.com. I have been useing their tools for years have never broken anything. They last as long as my Snap-On & Matco tools. I have been in the body repair busness for 30 years & use then every day.

Hi Mike,

It's very easy to make your own. A piece of 1/2" for base plate with a 1/2" center hole for the handle then a series of 1/4" holes from the center radius to place round bending dies.

The dies are made from cold roll round stock of various diameters with a 1/4" drill rod stock for the pin to fit into the base plate holes.

The 3/4" square x 18" long handle has a end piviot pin with a adjustable roller die for the second bending die. 3/4" or 1" round stock makes a good size with a 3/8" bolt hole in the die with thread holes in the handle.

Depending on die placement gives the different radius bends.

The die length determines the width of stock to be rolled. Dies also can be made from flatplate using different size holesaws.

This is alittle over built for 1/2" x 1/8" stock but will hold up well for many years.

Northern Tool has one in the metal fabrication section of their catalog. It's called a 'space saver parts bender'. Light duty, but probably OK for a home (farm) shop. Or www.northerntool.com
