My dad is buying a single axle truck to use to pull his horse trailer and to move his tractors and 931 caterpillar which is almost to heavy for his dodge dually. Now with that said he found a freightliner with a 300 cat. but now he has found a good deal on a 1999 int. Truck with the bed on it and already set up to pull his trailers. The thing is we dont know much about international diesels. We know the cats and cummins. Is this diesel good its a 530E with 275hp. It also has a 6 speed allison automatic. Is this a good combo or should he be concerned it only has 39,000 miles. Thanks for the help.

I am familiar only with the DT-466- a really good engine. The reason for the low power rating may be the automatic transmission. Often the manufacturer will use a lower torque rating transmission- to save some money- and will use a detuned engine to avoid damaging the transmission. It is not wise to try to increase engine power in these cases. Sounds as if this truck might have been used by Pepsi or Coke for distribution to retail outlets.

Chris, the International DT 530 (8.7 liter) is a stroked version on the International DT 460. Both share the 4.59 bore, but the DT 530 has a 5.35 stroke compared to the 4.68 stroke in the DT 460. The 275 HP at 2000 rpm is the lowest rating available with the DT 530. This yields a maximum torque of 800 lb-ft at 1200 rpm. One would think the lower rating should lead to a longer life. The DT 530 list peak outputs at the 275 rating of 285 Hp and 1200 lb-ft. I took all this information from literature I have here at work. I have no experience with this engine. Philip.
