Mig welder question

What is the proper way to hold the gun wile running a bead?
I learned how to weld with a torch and you have to hold it at a angle and push your bead along.
This is not working to well with my wire feed ( gasless) It just seems to be puddling all over the place and I cant control the bead.

Are you MIG welding with gas, or are you using flux-core wire? A push or pull technique will work. I find that for thin sheetmetal with MIG, a push technique helps prevent burn-through. For more penetration pull.

For MIG your torch is positive and ground negative. For Flux core, the Torch is negative and the ground positive.

Make sure you have a good contact tip that is the same size as your wire. Your drive roller groove must also match the wire size. A bunch of spattering usually indicates a worn out or oversized contact tip.

With Flux core wire, the wire speed control isn't as critical, but with MIG you have to tune it in just right. Set yourself up so that you can weld with one hand and tune in the wire speed with your other hand. It's like tuning in a radio - you'll know by the smooth buzz or sizzle that you have it right.

If you can weld with a oxy torch, then a wire feed should be easy! Good luck!!

Hi Kelly,

It doesn't matter weather your drag or push into a molten puddle while gas or Mig welding as both techniques will certifiy. I'm a drager on both as i find I have better weld puddle control.

As Wayne suggested make sure your polarity and amperage is correct. Most new Mig welders tend to move too slow when first learning but you've already stated you know what a molten puddle looks like.

Start with basics. Besure and prep the base metal clean 1" either side of center bead, check polarity, check wire type is correct ?, drag your puddle, adjust wire speed. The wire spool should be marked with size and material type.

If the above doesn't help post back with equipment and consumable details with machine settings and metal type and we'll go from there.

You want to pull the weld bead when you use a self shielded fluxcore wire.

Hey Kelly, it sounds like you need to play with your output voltage some and get it set right for the wire your using. If the weld is puddling and running out of control like you describe it sounds like your running way to high of a voltage. Something else that can also be wrong is that you may be running the wrong polarity for the wire your using. Some wires are designed for straight polarity and some for reverse polarity. If your using the wrong one you'll never be able to control the bead. As far as pushing or pulling the weld, in my experience it depends mainly on what you are welding and basically just using whichever technique works for a given situation.
