For years I had a hand operated tool that cut out barrel tops and left a nice smooth edge. It disappeared and I now desperately one? Does anyone have a source? The tool dealers here in the Tampa area don't know what one is;help is appreciated.

CAUTION - Cutting barrels with a torch can be a quick way to die! They easily explode depending on fumes inside!

Try Labsafety.com under the term "drum deheader" Here's a link to three different tools:

This tool cuts the end from 30-55 gallon drums,NOT cutting the ridge from cylinders on engines. If you ever hauled feed in drums cut with a chisel you will appreciate it.

If we didn't have the drum topper, in the oil business we used to use a pipe wrench and a good hammer. Put the jaws over the edge of the drum with the handle sticking out. Hit down on the front jaw with the hammer. Just keep working around the drum. Keep the jaws tight so they just fit over the edge. The purist will probably not like the improper use of the wrench, but it sure beats trying to use a chisel. Gives a cleaner edge also.

Are you talking about a cylinder bore ridge reamer? I've got an old one I've used a few times. Don't know if they still use them as a regular item. I bought mine 30 years ago at an auto parts place. It's an Ammco Ridge Reamer, Model 2100, Ammco Tools Inc, North Chicago, Illinois. I Did a search on the web and came up with tons of links. It appears they are still in business. Ammco Tools, Inc. 2100 Commonwealth North Chicago, Illinois 60064. I'm sure there are many other manufacturers of ridge reamers also.

I know what you mean about the chisel -bad news. I cut out my steel barrel heads with my torch.i also can blow vent holes in the side while i'm at it.burn barrels. no sharp edges.i always wear gloves when i handle them anyways.
