when you die? Here in the retirement park, there are two extremes: The heirs are either fighting over the tools or they sell them at the estate sale for pennies - like a $200 tool, unused in the box, for $5. There has to be a better way.

Another point. Both boys are well on thier way toward having their own collection of tools. The oldest son gets many good bargins at estate sales where a widow or kid is selling off stuff just to clear the house to sell. They booth appreciate tools and what I have and I do not think they will be fighting over them.

As I mentioned we spent a very pleasent evening around a camp fire, drinking Stone Brewery Pale Ale, smoking cigars, eating DO chili, telling bad jokes, and talking about the stuff I have and what I and they would like to see happen to it.

My sons are as interested in building and fixing things as I am. Both are over here all the time working on their own cars. My daughter is interested in woodowrking and has a few tools picked out. They have discussed it and pretty much know how they want to divide. I plan to be using them for another 30-40 years but who knows what will happen tomorrow.

I have prayed for Divine Intervention, asking for at least 2 months notice til my lease is up. Since I have no one to leave them to, I figured it will take me at least that long to dig a hole big enough. I�m taking mine with me.

Since I have no sons I am hoping I can trust one nephew, my sister's boy, to take his greatgrandfather's, grandfather's and my tools. He seems to be turning out to be a decent kid, and he'll get all of his father's tools also so the kid is going to need a good size barn for storage. He's 14 this year, and he's going to work for me over the summer.

Good luck with your nephew. A caring Uncle can be a great influence on a child, especially if his own father is missing or inattentive. Don't tell him he will inherit your goodies, just give him the opportunities to use them and appreciate them. He will either get the tool bug or he won't.

I have 2 sons. One has been interested in working on things since he was little, and has been a great help to me. My other son will help if I make him, but not willingly. He only wants to tinker with computers and play video games. Both got nice tool kits for their 16th birthdays. Both have taken care of their tools, but one boy's set is much more worn than the other. Guess who will be willed most of my tools?

Hopefully you will live for a long time and when your nephew inherits your tools, he will be able to store them properly and enjoy them. Maybe you should make some provision for their storage if the situation arises that you die in the near future. Most 14 year olds don't have much ability to buy or rent storage space. It would be a shame if he had to garage sale the tools because he couldn't afford to store them. Good luck.

With all the restoration projects I have for the kids to help on in the next few years, I hope they will want them...
1959 Edsel (80% done), 1973 Bronco (not started) 1940 9N (will inherit), needs rebuild 1952 Dodge fire truck (will inherit), mostly done

I have resisted the purchase of video games and other such items, and hope to keep doing so...
We go camping, fishing, etc..

If I could see the future I would sell them myself right before I died so my wife would get the full value, but as it is she will probably sell them at some ridiculas price when I am gone. I already know of a couple of guys that would just jump at the chance to Help Her get rid of my junk if you know what I mean. Most of my tools do not have a sentiment attatched but I do have few that were my dads and some that was my grampa's. It sure pains me to know they wont be passed on in the family as we were never blessed with kids. When my dad was still alive he gave some things to a couple of my nephews. In less than a years time they decided to sell them. So I cant even give them to anyone who cares.

99% of my hand tools were either given to me by my step father or I took from my Dad's estate. When my mother passes on I will save many of my step fathers tools. I have antique tools that were owned by a great uncle. Thoose tools were kept by my father. They were shipped from england in a large wooden box around 1900. They still reside in that box with several on display. in Going by what I see my sons doing now there will probably be a fight over mine after I'm gone.

Why do Kids today have no interest in tools?My kids help on the farm but take little interest in repairing things. When they have trouble with the car or truck I finally get them to pay attention.

Both my sons worked with me and saw the interesting things one could do with tools. We worked on Corvairs and antique tractors and now moth had old cars of thier own. They still now spend about as muc time in my shop as I do.

I think what has my kids interested is that most of their goodies are repaired items. If they see the benifit to themselves of salvage and repair they tend to take it up themselves. They have all been given things to take apart. They have watched me pick lawn mowers out of the dump. All of our push mowers are dump mowers. They have even requested their own tools. (now I have nobody to blame when I misplace something)

I think you've put your finger on it.

When I was young (through high school) my father owned a service station. 'Twas nice having cars that always ran but I never really was interested in learning much about them. Then, after high school, he closed the station and went into trucking. I think I learned more from him after the station was closed than I did while it was open. It seems like the motivation was missing when I didn't have my own car to maintain.

Whatever you decide to do, get it into writing very explicitly in a properly drawn up will. Not "split the tools up among the boys" but "Billy gets the lathe and Oscar gets the mill". I have seen too many families split up over who is going to get grandma's tea pot and I am sure the same thing can happen over grandpa's hand saw.

And do it while all are alive and standing there. My sons have already talked it out with me and each has choosen what they want and how the rest wil be divided.

We did it over a couple of beers and good cigars while sitting around a campfire eating DO chili.

Since the kids don't appreciate them I think I'll make sure they are all dull, rusty, contaminated with sand and water, shorted, missing handles, broken handles, leaking oil, bent, twisted, and otherwise broken and then give them all to the neighbor. After all that is the way he always returns them after borrowing them for periods of a year or more. I have an old garage sale chainsaw, floorjack, and aluminum ladder with loose rungs which I never maintain and it is just for that careless neighbor to borrow and gripe about. Hee,hee,hee.

Well if they go to someone who'll value tools, you'll leave a legacy that will last a lifetime. Every time I use a tool that came to me from one of my late ancestors, I remember them: That's Uncle Frank's wrench, or that's Dad's carpenter hammer, or that's Uncle Milo's pipe fitting tools! Bless'em all, They've made my life a little easier!

When my Mom & Dad split the sheets, my Dad offered his good friend alot of his tools while I was standing there. Now my Dad's tools would have been junk tools to him (had a fantastic shop) and meant nothing. After the guy said no thanks, I chewed my Dad out for not offering them to me as they ment something too me, memories of learning to use them whith his help.

A distant friend willed his Pacific reloader press to me. What a shock as we only had one conversasion about reloading. I expressed an interest in reloading during the conversastion. I felt kinda bad as his one son took all the guns and equipment that Dad had, numerous items. I offered the press back (one of many reloading press that Dad owned) but Dad's brother (good firend) said I would insult the son.

Couldn't figure that one out. I never met the son so I didn't have a clue how to contact him.

regarding t-bone and his writing,,,
i agre i went through the same thing with my grandfather passing.my uncles gave away everything and never to me.
i mean we had the old plow,,,,1923 white tractor trailer we used up till 1983 when welding shop closed.
it was a full fledged business
sheetmetal,car reapir fram e repair and welding shop.....
i just stood there dumb founded like a idiot while everything went out to auction or was given away or junked
i waited till the blacksmith shop was given to the local historic society and then the historic society threw out a full blacksmith shop of tool.
this was a real shop that started the welding shop way back in my grandfathers days.....i know this because i used to spend all my waking hrs there learning all the skills from tractor repair to welding to mechanics..... i was taught by all the old timers as well as the new comers...

I hope my boys will want them but not fight over them. Tools that a person make their living with are special, almost sacred to me. Most of mine came from a bodyman who retired just as I was starting out. His boys had no interest in them. He sold them to me at a real bargain only after he positivly knew I would apreciate what they are and take loving care of them. Many times I have looked and admired the tools thinking of the families they have provided for. They are my life blood in many ways. I have had tears in my eyes at estate sales when I see someones life meaning nothing. All I can hope is for someone to understand what my tools ment to me some day when I am gone. David.

Don't think any one would want my tools. I got big chains welded on to each one so it would be easier to keep track of them when i get to lookin for 'em or got'em in my pocket.

Well I have thought a bit about this, have nobody that I think will be interested im my stuff. Thinking maybe I will specify that my shop stuff be given to the local antique equipment club with the idea that it be given to somebody just starting out that could use it. Don't know if this would work but I am thinking of this now. Guns are a different problem, may give them away one at a time, keeping only a few favorites to the end, but they are all favorites for one reason or another. Problems, problems. Just don't want the government to get my guns.

Both my son and daughter learned to swing hammers and twist wrenches. They both had a big hand in rebuilding the cars that would be their first cars. My daughter worked along side me and others building he home. I was real proud when she laid out and cut the stair stringers for her home and insisted on building the back poarch deck on her own. My son went to Florida for herricane reconstruction when he was 13 and put together his own tool belt before he left and returned with every piece covered in roofing tar. He also turned one room of his appartment into a shop during college.Each and every tool I own has paid for itself many times over so I guess when I am gone I won't have a say but I think they will continue to be used.

i know the feeling . from some peoples stand point i dont have much in my personal collection but they mean a lot to me. a couple of tools from my pre teenage years. wish i had the tool makers clamp i made in aircraft sheet metal school 52 years ago in the airforce that they took for display . dumb old hill billy ridge runner school drop out from va grad top in class. 60 years worth of collection . i have one son and four daughters and 8 grandsons one of which maybe could do something with them .i have all ready told them if i fall over dead to just haul it all to a good tool sale and get the money because nobody knows the value or how to use them .in tracing my family history there are many craftsmen from shoe maker, blacksmiths , gunsmiths , railroad steam engine builders .carpenters and other skilled crafts now all the interest is in sports and other useless trivia .i wish they had soccker and the other silly games stuck up their noses crossways . i out grew that childness at about 12 years old

I know a 65 year old guy who has quite a nice machine shop and a large gun collection. He has lined up a well known local auctioneer to handle the disposal of his goodies when the time comes and has stated that in his will.

I think they issue you your own Snap On truck when you get to Heaven.

In the smoky place they also give you a Snap-on truck. Problem is you can never find the tool you need at the moment, as all the wrenches have 13 points, and the screwdrivers are all #4 phillips. The vice grips are all made in taiwan out of thin sheet metal, and the hammers are all painted balsa wood. Sounds like my shop some days!
Better figger out how to get to and get to the other place. The tools will be worth it!;-)

My son bought my repair shop from me. Beeing a mechanic for 45 years, I have a LOT of tools that he uses all the time although I use a lot of his we get along great so tools arent my worries
