Air compressor shooting off at the dipstick

My air compressor is doing something funny and I wanted to see if anyone knew what could be causing it. If I start out with no pressure or at the lower end of the pressure switch and turn on the compressor, after about a minute, pressure builds up in the lower end and the dipstick is forced up and completely out of the compressor. Are my rings on the piston worn?

You have no crankcase ventilation. The breather to the bottom end is plugged.

Hi anothertractor,

I would think it would be a broken/worn piston ring. If the check valve/unloader wasn't funtioning correct it wouldn't allow too much presssure to build but what pressure would build would have to pass thru a ring or piston hole to get into the crankcase.

Ray,
It sounds like a bad check valve or head unloader
to me that lets pressur back up into the pump.

Good chance you've got blow-by somewhere. Is there a crankcase vent of some sort that might be plugged? Otherwise, you're looking for how the pressure is getting by the piston(s). Has the time it takes to get up to pressure gotten longer than normal? This would be an indication of leakage also.
