I was fixing to change the fluid and filter in my 806. Book calls for HY-Tran fluid, but I was wondering if another good quality, less expensive brand would be alright to use.....All opinions welcomed....Foz

Take it from at least 4 IH mechanics(including myself)--use Hy-Tran. When and if you have a problem using any other fluid always change the hyd. filter and change it over to Hy-Tran and it will fix your problem alot of times. I don't like to take alot of chances with my tractor so I use Hy-Tran--it's $31.50 for a five gallon bucket at CaseIH and the cheapest I've found it anywhere else is $25/bucket for a cheap off-brand. "Oil is cheap--hydraulic and rearend problems aren't"

Travis,
It will also sometimes fix your problem by changing filters and putting in generic HYTRAN. I know, been there done that. Who makes HYTRAN ?

I think you are "implying" that just because an oil company makes more than one brand of oil they "must" be the same!! I don't agree. The additive packages could be worlds different.
For the most part, cheaper oils have cheaper additive packages, and oils that "barely" meet spec. just won't take the extra stress of longer oil changes that most owners do. (trans/hydraulics)
As i said before, the thing i like about Hytran is that it holds more moisture than the cheaper brands, at least i've been told that by enough people now who "should" be in the know, that i now believe it's true.
BTW, Hytran cost me 4 bucks more per 5 gallons, so buying the "good" stuff won't break me either. :>)

No problem from here. I realize that different quantities of additives can be added to a customers spec. The stuff I bought seemed to meet all of the non synthetic oil specs for all brands of tractors, etc, so I figured it couldn't be too bad.

I was quoted $10.00 more for 5 gal than the generic stuff. With a 2.5 hour drive round trip to pick it up. Considering I needed 20 gallons that added up to a bit of change. For 4 bucks more I might have bought the real stuff. I just know of several people with a long history of using the stuff in IH tractors with no problems. It had been used for 15 years in the I2444 I just bought.

Ben, how many changes at $40 extra would it take you to save a major tractor split and hydrolic overhaul at $2000 plus - - that is 50 changes. So many will save a buck and spend thousands.

Tom,
You are assuming that the generic Hytran fluid will cause problems, I have not seen this to be the case. Just going by some 30+ years of relatives experience on IH tractors. You may be right, but I may also be right.

I use these rules.
1.Best to use brand for your tractor, in your case Hy Tran.
2. Next best is to use your specs (in your case Hy Tran) number, and then buy NAME BRAND fluid that meets that spec. Example Pennzoil Hydra-Tranz. Check at Pennzoil web site may meet your HyTran spec. Tractor Supply sells Pennzoil Hydra-Trnaz for $29.99 per 5 gal bucket.
3. Third choice is to use off brand fluids that meet your spec. I would not do it, but in theory you should be safe. But, this approach is reserved for tight-a?? people who are willing to accept some risk to save a very few bucks.
4. Fourth choice is to use off brand fluid that does not meet your exact specs. This approach is reserved for those who like to spend huge bucks on huge rebuilding problems - - then cry about it at the local coffee shop.

only thing I've found pickey about fluid is buddy"s JD 510 backhoe with the hydrostat, just started slipping when hot(loader work) on TSC fluid. changed to JD and ran fine

Anything that meets the B-6 oil spec should work altho they(Case IH) claim the new Hy tran ultra is the best hytran type oil you can get. I use an Exxon hytran fluid that meets the min oil spec for all my several brands of tractors including IH. I choose that brand to support our 1 remaining hometown oil dealer. Hope doing so is not a case of shooting myself in the foot.

I do the same thing Jon. I know several people that have done that for years with no apparent problems. The oil may be the same inside just different on the label and price.
