Hi, Folks. By all means go for an auto-darkening helmet if that is what turns you on but take with you a word of warning. I have used an auto-darkening helmet which was supposed to be a very good one and all the other people in the company that I work for who used it swore by it. I used it probably around a dozen times and each time I ended up with mild to medium level welding flash to my eyes. It took a little while to work out what was causing these flashes. Eventually, I realised that each time I struck an arc with the auto-darkening helmet, I saw a mini flash before the lens darkened. Nobody else in the company mentioned seeing these mini flashes. I posted this experience on this forum a month or two ago and a couple of others posted saying they had had similar experiences. This was enough to convince me that I was not seeing things, not that I needed convincing. The sore eyes were all the evidence I needed. I'm not saying don't use an auto-darkening helmet. I AM saying be aware of this possibility. If you notice that your eyes are getting sore after using it then it may be a good idea to change back to a conventional helmet. My .02.
