Just wondering what helmets some of the weldors use. I have been using a Jackson Shadow but think I am going to upgrade to a Jackson 3N1 auto hood. I was told it can also be used with a torch.

I use a helmet made by Arc One. Its auto dimming with variable shade 7-14 via a dial on the outside of the hood so you can change it without taking your helmet or gloves off. Best part is it is solar powered, no batteries to change or go dead, no on/off button to forget to turn on, just put it on and weld. It changes in like 1/200th of a second or something outrageous like that. I dont even notice a mini flash with it and I been using it almost daily for a year now.

Hi, Folks. By all means go for an auto-darkening helmet if that is what turns you on but take with you a word of warning.

I have used an auto-darkening helmet which was supposed to be a very good one and all the other people in the company that I work for who used it swore by it. I used it probably around a dozen times and each time I ended up with mild to medium level welding flash to my eyes. It took a little while to work out what was causing these flashes. Eventually, I realised that each time I struck an arc with the auto-darkening helmet, I saw a mini flash before the lens darkened. Nobody else in the company mentioned seeing these mini flashes.

I posted this experience on this forum a month or two ago and a couple of others posted saying they had had similar experiences. This was enough to convince me that I was not seeing things, not that I needed convincing. The sore eyes were all the evidence I needed.

I'm not saying don't use an auto-darkening helmet. I AM saying be aware of this possibility.
If you notice that your eyes are getting sore after using it then it may be a good idea to change back to a conventional helmet.

My .02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I've been using an auto darkening helmet for quite a while, and have adopted the "blink" method recommended by a fellow on the "moparts.com" forum I belong to. I used to also notice a quick spark every now and then with my Jackson helmet. Now I just make it a point to do a quick eye blink when I pull the trigger on the welding gun. Took me a while to get coordinated, but now it's second nature, and I don't have any more sore eyes or headaches (from welding, anyways).

I have put in some long sessions with my Speedglass ecno model and have had no signs of flash burns. I do keep the sensor clean and change batteries every 6 months.

I weld for a living. I have a Jackson Shadow with a Sundown Solar lens and I find i can weld alot better with alot less mis-arcs.
