Around my area it is hard to find a welding job that pays over $10 a hour. I served a apprenticeship to be a machine builder. Now I can weld, machine, electrical, pneumatics, lay out and design items. What I am trying to say is you probally want to do more than weld to make a decent living. At least that is what I learned.

I've been welding now for 20 years, always used shade 12 or 13. Last year switched helmets, and this spring started having eye problems and headaches, and 20/30. Yesterday, went and bought a Speedglass 9000x and the difference was literally like night and day. Don't skimp on a helmet, and do not cut corners, take the extra time to put safety glasses on before grinding or chipping. Would the people you are doing work for risk their safey for you?? Never in a million years.

welding is no job for a wuss. It's hot, dirty, noisy, smelly, dangerous work. I've had my eyes burnt, slag dug out of them and hot balls of fire bounce off them too. Scaring blocks my vision.
If your worried about your eyes, find work behind a desk.

First you need not tell me what welding is like, i have done my fare share. as for your wuss coment that is quite uncalled for. you sound like a deere owner or a puller. i would love to know how in the world it is that you could get slag in your eyes? what you weld without a helmet and glasses? or are you just full of it? i have had my hair smolder slag burn threw the top of my leather shoes and burn into my foot, but even welding on my back i have yet to get slag burns any higher than my neck.

You must be a shop welder. Out in the real world of construction, like the "boilermaker" craft. You'll get plenty of slag in your eyes.
Powerhouse repairs require lots of manpower, with people welding, burning and working with an air arc over head all day long.FIRE EVERYWHERE..... .
You better stay in the shop dude.

I've been welding, doing mechanical work, etc and teaching welding for 20 years. Last year at my CDL physical I had 20/15 in one eye and 20/10 in the other. Wear your helmet and safety equipment EVERY TIME, you'll be ok.

Hi Steven,

Ya, I think I had weak eyes to begin with as by 3rd grade I couldn't see the blackboard sit'n in the front row.

That was really hard for me to give up as I enjoyed welding.

I wore a special made safety glasses that had fine wire eye cups on the side that fit tight to the side of my face and wearing a full face shield, I went to the eye Doc three weeks in a row to get steel out of my eyes.

I was welding some 6" high pressure steam pipe next too a 90 degree concrete wall and it would bounce them in there some how. The fourth week I changed to a sock hood and that took care of the problem but what a PITA to use.

What shade lens do you use? 10 is a min, I use an 11 for stick welding, and 12 or 13 for high amperages of stick/flux core and TIG welding aluminum. I have a variable shade auto darkening helmet, I can adjust it by the turn of a knob. With the proper shade your eyes should not bother you, perhaps you might want to check with your doctor.

Have you checked with an eye doctor? If your condition cannot be corrected by an equipment change then I would not do any more welding than necessary if it was me....my 2 cents. :-)
