Wire Welder for under 1,000 complete

I am looking at wire welders for under $1,000 dollars with gas, bottle and hood. I only need a 175 amp machine and have 220v single phase available. I just want one for home use, I have access to larger machines at work, but would rather do my own projects at home. Does any one own a Millermatic 175 or a Lincoln 175? The dealer here sells those so I am most interested in those brands.
Does anyone do a review on these welders, that is available online. The only thing I've heard is that the Lincoln is a smooth machine and that the Miller is liked by some pro's. The Miller has an automatic wire speed adjust when voltage dial is adjusted, is that going to take away from controlling the machine in any useful way? I would appreciate any help in choosing between these two welders.

PaulC,Get the Lincoln Sp175 plus,and don't look back.Its arc is the best of all of the little welders.Its arc is really better then most larger welders also within it's range.When I was trying to get my Lincoln powermig 300 dialed in,I would use my sp to check on my progress of how I was doing.It really can start to make you mad when your little welder can blow away a machine with all the latest tech,and cost four to five times as much.The Sp175 plus is really a solid little welder.Also tough as nails,and proven!

Thanks Scott, that's what I did and am I aggree. It isn't as impressive to look at as the bigger ones, but it's a nice working little welder.

I am glad you picked that one,because it really put down a very nice bead.I kind of thought thats what it's all about.People get to wrapped up into the specs,like fancy drive rolls,and the like.The Little Lincolns sp plus models are the best of all the ones ever built in the arc department.Within the last few years I had two Miller 130/130xp,and a Miller 185.The lincolns is better than those,but I did get finally get the 185 to weld correctly.I put the little Lincoln gun on it,and it fixed the .023 welding with that machine.None of the 185 welded right with .023,and thats the reason.That one is right in there with a sp175 plus.The lincoln weighs about 100lbs less which is a big plus for moving it.

I have a Lincoln SP-175T. It welds great. I use it mainly for smaller jobs like repairing hay rings but it will weld whatever you want. Of course, when I have big iron to bond, I am gonna always use a stick machine. I agree with another post, go with a 220 machine. Any of the top brands are good, stay away from the foreign machines. TSC does run specials on the Hobart 175 or eBay has many dealers selling new and factory refurb Lincoln, Miller and Hobart very reasonable, many with free shipping. Good luck.

Yes I'm sticking with a 230V from a local dealer, price is within $50 anyway. I expect a freebee or good deal on other things I will buy from them with the package.
I am looking at the Lincoln because many say it has a nice arc even though it is lighter than the miller by about 15 pounds. What do you expect for duty cycle while welding 3/16 using .030 solid with 75/25 mix?
Do you have an idea whether the miller is rated more conservatively than the lincoln,I heard that too?

I have been using a Millermatic 185 for about 3 years now with no problems at all. Machine does a great job. Only complaint I have is that we dropped it from a tractor/loader and almost ripped the tank restraint off the back. It problably could have been a little more substantial, but I am sure it wasn't meant for that abuse.

I will definately try to not drop it, I guess they don't make em like they used to, haha. What does the automatic wire speed compensator do? You can still adjust wire speed anywhere you want to after adjusting voltage, right?

Hi Paul, I just bought a Hobart 175 Handler. It is a 220 volt unit, which you really want. Don't waste your time with 110v. I got a great deal a couple of months ago from Tractor Supply Company.(TSC) Their regular price was $649, and I got it for $581 on sale. This included a roll around cart which is a $100 item alone. It came complete with gas regulator. The tank you would have to get at your welding supply, App. $165. Harbor frieght has great prices on self darkening hoods. This is a sweet machine, rated for 20 gauge to 1/4. Four heat settings, infinate wire speed. I have welded on #3 heat for 3/16 angle and had plenty of guts. I believe that Hobart and Miller are now one of the same company. Good luck, Ken

3/16 metal can be stick welded easily also, you could pick up a stick welder cheaper
