My air compressor has been neglected for the last year while building the house. It has done a fine job but all of a sudden it is poping the breaker.
I reset the breaker that is when the motor turns a few revolutions then stops. Then breaker pops again. Any Ideas what causes this.

If this is a belt drive unit. Unplug the machine and remove the drive belt. Plug it back in and start the motor to see if you still blow the breaker. Check the motor armature for corrosion and the capacitor start circuit and clean or replace. If the motor runs fine hand rotate the pulley. You should be able to feel resistance when the piston is compressing the air. If the resistance is constant, you have internal problems with the compressor cylinder. You can try and free up the mechanical parts by removing the cylinder head and soaking with Marvel Mystery oil. Funny name but it works well. By all means check the oil, you may be lucky and just need to change the oil. I know of a farmer who was highly mechanical. He bought a new compressor piped his barn and with glee started the compressor. After about 15 minutes it started blowing the electrical circuit. Guess what, no oil. He let it cool down , added oil and used a large pipe wrench to crank the thing over. Got it working with some strong arm, oil and a red face every time he thinks of it.

I had the same problem. The circuit must be 20 amp. I was using a 20 amp circuit with a GFCI receptacle, which has a 15 amp circuit breaker in it. I took it to Campbell Hausfield repair facility and paid $18.00 to find out there was nothing wrong with my compressor, and determined what had happened. My $.02.

Let us start simple, first are you useing an extention cord? if so that is your problem, an extention cord should never be used. it will cause the breaker to over load and you will find that the motor will spin very slowly. if this is an older one this will happen very often. i hope that this helps.

No extention cord, plugged directly into a outlet.
I do have to confess that I have not done any preventive maintaince at all. IE. drain the tank, change the oil.
Another question, what maintanice needs to be done on these? It is not that old maybe 5yrs old, my father in law had it and did not use it very often at all. Mostly just to blow up tires and stuff.

Thanks for the info.
Tom

Is this compressor belt or direct drive ? If direct drive it may well be oilless.

An easy way to check if pressure buildup is a problem. Open the drain valve to let all of pressure out of the tank then try the compressor. If it starts and builds pressure to the shutoff rating then you have a bad check valve or a bad relief valve. If it will not start then motor or compressor.
Good Luck

possibly either the check valve is not holding air in the tank alllowing air to bleed back(current problem with mine) or unloader is not working. if air bleeds off after compressor shuts down and then compressor restarts real slow and trips breaker check valve is bad. if no air bleeds off when compressor stops then check unloader valve. another possibility if not one of the above is the start capacitor is bad on motor

Piston may not be completely free. Rust, dirt, etc.
