Tool tip for today talks about the virtues of a needle scaler. I've looked at various catalogs and web suppliers but have yet to find a source for this item. Can anybody help me locate one ? Thanks.

Thanks to all who replied. Now all I need to do is sneak one into the house without my other half finding out about it.

Follow the link to Northern Tools, type "scaler" in the keyword search box and it will show you 3 of them.

I have had the cheap model for about 6 years in home/occasional use and it's still fine. There's nothing better or faster for removing heavy paint/rust buildup short of an industrial sized sandblaster.

If you want to use it every day, or for making a living, you probably would be happier with the more expensive model though.

Not for thin sheet metal. Works best on heavy rust scale and thick layers of paint. A less messy alternative to sandblasting. Need hearing protection and dust respirator.

I bought one that "Mac" refers to for rust and busting slag off from welds. I got it for 9.99 in one of their sale catologs with an extra set of replacement needles, one of the best add on tools for a air chisel !!!! They do sell a "in-line " version for around $60 for tight places.

Harbor Freight has them. About $15 a few years ago. You will need an air chisel. The needle scaler fits down on the front in place of the removeable steel chisel.

Needle scalers work great especially where the surface is uneven with nooks & cranies. This is one of the better quality scalers.

It's a handheld air driven tool that has a little 'bundle' of small hardened steel (or other durable material)rods that strike the surface of the part you want to clean. It really knocks the rust, paint, scale, off your parts or cleans flux off of welds. Made by Ingersoll-rand and many other air tool Mfrs. You can use it for decorative texturing of metal too and for stenciling the uses go on and on. I'm sure some of the other regulars on this forum have their own uses for scalers.
