I've been wanting a decent gas powered portable welder for 10 years and now am seriously thinking of buying a machine. Want to spend less than $3,000 for a new one. I need some pros and cons of what is available, also what engine is the best. Will probably keep this machine for a long time so I need something that is easy to get parts for, have many local dealers nearby, but they all say theirs is the best. Help!!

Hi Johnny, The best welding machine is sort of like the Ford vs. Chevy argument. In my opinion there is not enough difference in the major brands to talk about. The difference is the man holding the stinger. And, that man gets better with experience.Just my $.02 worth!

All the top brands are comparable but I prefer Lincoln. I have a Ranger 8 (and several buzzers and one mig) that I use often and just acquired a SA-200 that welds great as well. I emailed Lincoln about a manual and they sent out operator manual, full schematics, parts list fast and FREE. You cannot beat their customer service. I have a short list of company loyalties but Lincoln is at the top.

Have a Miller Bobcat 225 with 20HP Kohler. Best thing I've seen or used.

I had been renting for quite a few years, then last September I broke down and bought a Lincoln Ranger 250. Just an amazing machine for arc stability, and versatility. Check out the Lincoln website. It has a 20hp Kohler, that has been trouble free so far, but I think this engine is used in a few machines. I really wanted a diesel, but couldn't justify the expense. HTH!

Johnny; You can't go wrong on any of the top brands!! Your dealer's will vary more then the equipment will! It will get down to a "matter of opinions", and so in the final it will be up to you to decide on which make to buy.
