a few years ago I made a portable air compressor out of a 3hp engine run with another 3 hp. I replaced the spark plug with this valve that I found in some box of junk. It worked great till last week when a piece of pipe fell over and broke it. This valve was used in older times, you removed the spark plug, skrewed this valve connected to a hose into the plug hole, started the engine and inflated the tire. Does anybody know where I could find a replacement, or somthing that would work in its place? thanks for any info.

Spark Plug pumps are still made. They do not pump cylinder air thru the hose, but use the pulse to fill the hose with fresh air taken in thru the slots on the device and push it thru the hoseCheck auto parts, farm supply stores. Also popular tool with touring motorcyclists so larger bike shops may stock also.

In the '60s & 70s all the off-road shops used to sell a kit with a sparkplug valve pump, hose and chuck to carry in your rig. I think JC Whitney used to have 'em as well. :-)

Hi Cole,

The "valve" you are talking about looked like this, didn't it?

Check out this thread on this forum last year. There are quite a few posts there about such a valve along with a couple of possible sources. I have not noticed a source in recent years. The one I have dates back to the '50s :o). There are also a couple of suggestions in that same thread on how to cobble together such a device.

You might be able to use an engine compression tester hose or cylinder leakdown tester hose. One end threads into the spark plug hole and the other has a quick disconnect air hose fitting.

Cole what you need is an air check valve which has one way flow through it. The surplus center has several sizes available. Click on air on the upper left corner.
