I have a Prodigy Brake controller with a red wire that's to be connected to the 'cold side' of the brake switch. I see no switch on the brake pedal itself, but there is a wire going to the center of the brake proportional valve. I have no wiring diagram of the '76 Chevy van, so I'm lost as to where the red wire connects. I know several people have recently aquired the same controller and may know the answer. Thanks.

The way I install trailer brakes is I look at the brade pedal arm, look at the wires. I then cut one and see that when I press on the brake pedal, it sparks, then I tie the wire from the brake controller into that wire. At least thats the way I've done it on our 78 Ford 3/4 ton and my 79 1-ton.

'cold side of the brake swwitch' is the same as 'hot side of the brake lamps'

if you can't find the switch. run a wire from the power side of the brake lights forward to the controller

Hi Slowpoke,

Is the brake light switch on the master cylinder on the 76?

I have a 76 1ton sitting out back. I always wanted to intall the body on my Dodge PW frame til I looked at all the work.

T-Bone... There is no switch on the master cylinder. I took a course on brakes about ten years ago, and had forgotten that the proportional valve operates the warning light. It's a part that's seldom thought about. Chevy changed the van in '78 and it's getting hard to find restoration parts, even at JC Whitney.

ps,

I don't think you should tie into the wire that goes to the proportioning valve. I think that one only grounds a circuit that lights a dash "BRAKE" indicator that signals a failure of the front or rear hydraulic system. Nothing to do with your normal rear brake lights.

Hi Slowpoke,

I recently installed a Prodigy in my truck. I could see the brake switch but could not get at the darned thing without tearing a lot of stuff out of the way. Of course the wires from it disappear into a wiring harness almost immediately :o). I was able to locate the cold side wire (the one that goes to the rear brake lights) and connect into that under the carpet near the drivers seat. A wiring diagram certainly helps. Without one, you may have to go all the way to the rear brake lights to find the right one and wire forward from there.

You'll like your Prodigy. It works great. I was thinking about a different controller until I posted here a while back. The responses I got convinced me to change my mind and go with the Prodigy. I am glad I did.

I run a wire from the rear brake lights up to the controller at the same time I run the brake wire to the back of vehicle. I run four wires total two 12vdc from battery, one to trailer plug and one to isolation module for trailer lights, one from brake light to brake controller and one from brake controller to trailer plug.

How big(AWG) do you need to run back to the controller from the brake lights? In the instructions of the controller I am using(No laughing it's a drawtite)it says to use #10 to the brakes so I bought about 30'(installing on an '85 Suburban) of two colors of #10 to run back there. Will #18 work or do I need to go bigger? Thanks

Rich
