I have a trailer that is made from a trailer house axle, the kind where just the rim and tire clamps to the hub. Is there some hub that will bolt on so I can put regular wheels and tires on it?

I bought some trailer house axles a few years ago to put on a trailer frame that was given to me. The man that sold them to me said they were #42 axles. I could just go to a Dexter dealer and get the backing plates, brakes, and hubs with 8 lugs that would use the same spare tire that my pickup used. I bought all that but nothing fit my axles. I went back to Dexter and bought axles to fit the stuff that I had bought. Now my trailer has two 7000 lb. under it. The floor is 3 in bridge planks that my county commissioner gave to me when he replaced a bridge. The tongue is 6 in channel iron. The only thing I ever bought for it is the axles. Everything else was given to me. The only draw back is that it is a bumper pull trailer. Empty it is all that a 1/2 ton pickup can handle. My advise is measure how long you need the axles and buy it all togather. 4000 to 5000 lb axles will probably do fine.

If it`s a Dexter axle you can get what you need from a Dexter dealer, they even have weld on flanges if you want to add brakes. Russ

Jeff, I don't think you are being ignored, I think it's just that many of us have the same question but no answer.

Although several folks here do not like mobile home axles for various reasons or legalities,I know of several long term trailers, that are serving well with them.As to your problem, you would need to know spindle diameter and service length, then match that with a conventional 5-6 bolt hub and bearings, possibly something off a pickup truck front or such if aftermarket trailer hubs can't be found.I've finally got everything but my boat trailer matching my truck,so I always have an extra spare.

I guess I'll just experiment and post back someday on what I found that worked. I don't want to invest a bunch of money in it as it is just the trailer that I dump junk in to haul to the landfill. I probably pull it 25 miles once every 6 months. I just thought maybe someone had changed them at one time and could say like "use 72 Dodge pickup hubs, they'll bolt right on" Thanks folks.

For the amount you are going to pull it, why would you buy anything for it???? It's it good enough now for 25 miles every 6 months?????

I have a tri axle house trailor axle trailor, and it's been very good. The only thing i've done to it is throw away those "one way" tires and buy some good ones. I have brakes on all 3 axles, and the axles are rated 6000# ea.. Robert

I had a tire blowout and in the process I ruined the rim. The only place I could find one of these rims and tires wanted $60 each for them.

Look around, they sell for 25 bucks each here. BUT, even at 60. it's cheap compared to what you will spend to change things!! Robert

Hi Jeff,

I agree with Robert, look at someone installing MH thats removing the axles. I've bought some for $20, $30 or a case of beer. They like to dicker on the price or brew.

I come across mobile home axles a lot at auctions. Newer ones are labeled "For Mobile Home Use Only". Does anyone know why? I've seen many trailers that appear to be made from such axles.
