Welding cast metal

I have some cast metal that I need to weld back together due to some breaks. At first I thought that it was cast iron, but now I think that it is probably cast metal due to the color and such. I have already cleaned it up and am planning on preheating with the torch before I try to weld. I believe that I need to use a smaller diameter electrode so the heat will not be to high. The piece is not even a quarter inch thick. Just looking for advice on any trouble that I might run into and the best electrode to use or if GMAW(Mig or Wire) would be more appropriate. Thanks for the help.

I have been welding up things on the farm for a long time and I have heard of cast iron but never cast metal as you put it. At any rate I have always used just a plain old stick welder using a nickel rod on cast iron. On thinner pieces just weld in short spurts. Good luck

I hope it is not POTMETAL. There is cast iron and cast steel, the cast steel is easier to weld. I am not sure how to mend potmetal, JB weld maybe.

Good luck
