I have an older Horse model from the mid 70's with a #HH60 Tecuseh that needs replaced. Has anyone swapped engines?

The Troy Bilt requires an engine with a 3/4" shaft (tapped for bolt - 7/16" ?), while most 6, 7 & 8 hp engines are built with 1" shafts. Any reputable seller, small engine warehouse, Northern, Kelley's (www.jaykelley.com) will have "Troy Bilt replacement engines". There are replacements available mfg by Briggs, Tecumseh and Kohler. Pick your favorite brand, hp and price. The bargain you find at your local shop may not fit. Good luck.

Just be sure and get a tiller rated motor with bearings not bushings on the output shaft.

Let us know how it turns out.

a couple of years ago I swapped out a 6 hp tec for a 8 hp briggs on my old troy built tiller that I think is the same model you have. I got the new briggs from northern tool, sdvertised as their tiller replacement motor. It was an easy swap with no surprises.

Mike,

About ten years ago, dad's early/mid 70's 6-horse Troy-Bilt shucked a rod. I hate Tecumsehs anyway, so I replaced it with a Briggs & Stratton 5-horse I.C. engine, and have never had any trouble since. I got the engine from Northern Tool, although any place that sells Briggs engines could get one for you. Make sure you get one with the four-bolt mounting area around the shaft--you need this to secure the engine to the tiller. Its really not that hard to do. Just take your time.

Good Luck!

Ron

Tractor Supply has a 5.5 Briggs for $200 that I think might work. This old Tecumseh still runs but drinks oil and fouls out the plug. I'm getting too old to pull that damn rope and play Mr. Goodwrench everytime I want to use it.

Drinks oil and fouls plugs?
I'd check into doing a simple rebuild of the engine. Remove the cylinder head and check the cylinder for wear or scoring. If wear is minimal and no scoring you most likely will get by with just a new set of piston rings and to deglaze the cylinder. I had one of those old Troy-bilts from an auction several years ago. It ran fine until you tried to use it, then it puked oil out of the crankcase breather into the air filter and killed the enigne. I took off the vent hose and tried it and it worked fine, except now it sprayed so much oil in the air that I got covered with oil. I took the engine apart and found all was fine except worn rings, a set of new rings and deglaze the cylinder made it work like it should.

If you buy a new one be advised Troy Bilt requires a unique shaft size and engine mounting. Someone already mentioned the mounting. I can't remember the shaft size but it's an odd ball. If you just go to the store and buy an engine it won't fit. I tried. Wound up rebuilding mine. Not much to it.
