I really appreciate the honest replies people! I checked the forums at an ATV site and the brand sniping was outrageous. Here's the situation, I had about settled into the 400 to 500 4x4 sport/utility segment when I found an ad for the Bombardier 650 4x4. The 2003 model can be had for less than another brands 400! Has anyone have any knowledge about these machines? I have been around Ski-Doo snowmobiles and not been impressed, but this price is sure tempting...

i sure wish the gov't would ban all them durn noisy 4 wheelers. just make a lot of racket and they tear up the landscape. most weekends around here sounds like a race track and the dust is horrible. heck, the gov't banned or controlled everything else, so why not these things?

I used to be anti 4 wheeler. Didn't want one, didn't like them, didn't see the use. Then I got one. I strictly use mine for work, but it sure beats a horse for hearding cattle. I replaced 2 hayburners with 1 4wd ATV, it only eats when I use it, doesn't need a vet or farrier, and costs about 2/3 of what one really good cutting horse costs. Yesterday had a heifer out on a neighbor, got her back in and had the fence fixed in the time it used to take me to get a horse caught and saddled.

I don't think 4wheelers are so loud. Definately not as loud as my Farmall Super M with the straight pipe. An average 4 stroke quad would be quieter than your average dirtbike.
Yes four wheelers are more destructive than dirtbikes and snowmobiles combined, but I'd bet you a bunch of money they're only going to get more popular.

Theres alot of them that run around by my farm. For years Uncle Reg fought them, piled brush in the trails put up signs, etc. They'd pull down the signs, toss the brush onto the field roads, just be lousy about it. After he sold Dad and I the farm we met with the local 4wheeler club, established a trail across the farm put up trail signs. Now the club keeps an eye on the farm for us, we have no more problems with vandals, the riders for the most part go around the fields and don't cause troubles, they police themselves. Sure theres a few bad apples, but the good club riders take care of them for us. I feel alot more comfortable with the farm knowing their looking out for us rather than us just causing ill-will.

good for you that you have someone trained to look after your interests. i personally don't want the darn machines on my land. the noise, dust and liability issues are what is making me dislike them. as far as getting more popular, you might be right. i can almost imagine that someday soon, they might be street legal like motorcycles.

In northern Maine around my farm while they aren't street legal the local athorities kind of look the other way if people only go a little way on the road. Rule used to be you could travel the space of 3 telephone poles, but now they let it stretch a bit. Most people up there use the four wheeler as a substitute car. Travel right to the Burger King and McDonalds on 'em. Some folks even commute to work. Theres a separate little house at some of the border crossings, or at some they have re-routed the trail from the woods over to the crossing.

For the most part I'd like to get rid of them, but on the other hand I'd like to have one too, nothing better for clearing a snowmobile trail in the summer time. Awful handy for clearing brush and other general jobs around too.

Theres quite a few Bombardier machines in this area.(eastern Canada)They make a good machine and have a longer warranty than the other brands but their wheel base is wider than other brands and its harder to drive a trail that has ATV rutts in it.As the Bomby doesn't fit in them.Depends what your going to do with it.Something to think about.

Thanks for the imput everyone. Definitely have to give it a serious looking over. If anyone is wondering, the Bombardier on closeout is 650cc, 4x4, front rack, hi, low, reverse. $4495. I hate to be the Guinea Pig on new stuff though!

Kevin: I agree with Benthar's comment--Bombardier has had quite a few problems with these so far. I know of only one person locally that owns one, and he's had some problems with his--engine trouble mainly. It was all covered under warranty, but not what you want from a new machine. It's to be expected with new models--it takes a couple of years for companies to work the bugs out. I'd look at a 2-3 year old machine--depreciation on ATV's in general is pretty steep, and you can pick up a like-new machine 3-year old machine for less than half the cost of a new one. A Honda Rancher or Foreman, Polaris Sportsman, or any Yamaha that has a bear in the name would make you an excellent work/play rig that has considerably more field-testing than the Bombardiers.

I think whatever make you decide on you will be happy with. These 4x4 quads are like a single seat jeep or 4wd tractor. Personally I went with Suzuki because of the 5 speed transmission and the high, low, and compound low range gearbox.
That makes 15 fwd gears and 2 reverse. With a 300cc engine you would be surprised at the power. Well thats my 2 cents.

My son is a service tech for a Honda/Bombardier dealership. He says Bombardier will have a nice machine in a couple years when they get the bugs out, but for now Honda has a definite advantage in realiability

Don't know about the Bombardier, I got a Honda Foreman off ebay for $3800, 99 model with 300 miles. Seemed like a good buy, sure love the machine.

The high US dollar and low Canadian peso/dollar makes the Molsen beer drinking, back bacon eating, touqe wearing, red green entertained, Beaver built products cheaper to purchase. Probably why Deere is putting their name on a Bombardier this year.

Yes I am very opinionated. My Mom's cooking is also preferred over your Mother's cooking anyday. I like my wife more than your's, my children better than your's.I like my Country more than your's. Does this make me a bigot? By the way I get paid every two weeks in Canadian peso's.

Good luck with your purchase. The only comment I have is too bad all the ATV makers give such a lousy warranty (usually 6 months), since they charge so much for the product. It doesn't say much for them backing their product. I have a Honda XR250l, street and trail bike that is excellent (its a 93), and just can't phathom paying 5 or 6k for a quad.
