I have a 200 ft.lb torque ratchet. I have a 350 inch. lb. ratchet. Have an application to tighten 8000+ bolts at 20 ft.lbs.; Now the question: Since the inch pound ratchet is smaller and lighter and would be easier to use , would the setting of 240 inch pounds be the same as 20 foot pounds or is there some exotic formula that is applied here? Sure hope this is not too stupid of a question.

You are correct. If you want to complicate the math, this is the formula. in.lb= ft.lb divided by 0.0833, conversly, ft.lb= in.lb x 0.0833. It's much simpler the way you did it, just multply by 12. A thought- Have you considered renting/buying a air or electric adjustable torque wrench. They are quite similar to an impact wrench with the addition of the capability of setting the torque. The ones I've seen and used are 3/8 drive air powered, but 1/4 and 1/2 are available.

Someone makes an extension for an air impact wrench that will limit torque. I have used them in the auto shop.

I think they are called Torq Sticks

Just a thought.

Thanks for confirming my math, Ray. Might look into the ratchet idea since I have a compressor on site (New metal arch building). Got to figure my arm will be getting sore after a couple hundred. thanks again.

Why coulden't you adjust the torque on your 3/8" air wrench.....against your inch lb. torque wrench? mark the setting on the knob and test check it from time to time..... I wouldn't use extension, that changes things.....
