I bought a gooseneck stock trailer at an auction this weekend, now I need to install a hitch in my pickup.I found one at tsc that is a 2 5/16 ball welded to a steel plate measuring 42" by 16".Can I put this on the bed floor and drill through the bed and into the frame ?There is about an inch and a half gap between the bed and frame so I would use blocking there.I am also assuming the ball should be centered over the axle.

I have a unit that has never been mounted in truck if you would be interested. Ball is removable. Just thought might help.

First of all, save yourself some time and aggravation and let someone else put the hitch in. A respectable trailer dealer will usually do a great job with no hassle.

If you are still stubborn like me and want to save the $100 there are several different setups that are on the market that will bolt in with considerable aggravation for around $300-500.

Cheapest way out if you don't mind the ball being in your bed all the time is to weld a piece of 1" thick steel plate on top of the chassis rails and just mount the ball directly to that. Of course you can always weld the nut to the bottom of the plate and use a pipe wrench to remove the ball if and when you need to.

Bottom line, there are a hundred ways to do it, and I have never heard of any real disadvantages to any of them. I've had 4 trucks with none of them done the same way, but didn't have any problems with any of them.

I've always been told to put the ball 4 to 6 inches ahead of the centerline of the rear end. Matter of fact, the last hitch I bought and installed had that in the instructions.

Just my $.02!!

Don't drill through the top of the frame rail. The top and bottom flanges are the strength elements in the frame, and the drilled holes will weaken it.

Instead, build a crossmember that rests atop the frame rails, and a couple of drop down brackets which can be bolted to drilled holes through the web (side) of the frame.

Also consider setting your ball a little ahead of your axle. It seems to make the ride nicer and will help with turning, not much ahead just 2"-3". Good luck

Instead of having the ball and plate obstructing the bed for other uses I prefer the turn-over-ball hitch. It pivots up or down for use or full unobstructed bed use. It mounts under the bed securly to the frame. If desired a full featured 5th wheel hitch is available that attaches to the ball, so both hitches may be used and retain full bed use.

Hi Bob,

Since we had a commerical advertisement I'd thought I'd post under Ray's as the entire thread will be deleated to remove the ad. You might want to post a new thread again so that a discussion can continue.

You know I thought the same thing but in this case it WAS solicited. He is olnly trying to help by refering him to someone who can sell him what he needs. If he does not want to buy it then he knows about it but don't have to buy.
Just a thought.

Where in that commerical post did the poster refer to the original question on GN hitchs? Where did it even hint that it was related to GN hitchs? It did not, period!

The commerical ad is asking for new dealers to sell his wares and thats all!!!
This website arrives it's income from advertising and contributions fees too give us a website to talk on and one rule of the website is

NO COMMERICAL ADVERTISING in threads.

If he wants to advertise and pay his due then he should go through the proper channels and contact Kim.

It's been that way for the past 5yrs or so I've been using the website. If it gets abused then the website will not exist.

bob asked for input on his gn hitch. Ray has come across a slicker setup than a piece of plate with a ball on it like what tsc (oops did i just advertise for them?) is selling. He put a link to the companies website....you expect the company not to adversite on their own website? All the site wants is dealers? Did you look under ordering info? Anyone can call and purchase of these gn hitches, you dont have to become a dealer. Just last week I put a reply to a question regarding autodarkening helmets and i put the link to the companies website in my post because i think it's a damn good helmet. You yourself had a reply in that post and did not mention anything about the link i put in. Guess what that website is nothing but an advertiement for that company, what's the difference? If you wanna get on someone's case, tell Tony not to advertise his pre-owned tractors on here.

Sorry Ray,

LOL now I see with wide open eyes. I was reffering too ANTHONY TRAN posts that was commerical, not Ray's.

I know Ray would never do anything like that as he's been a great help on the websites for sometime now.

I just figured Kim would boot the thread and didn't want to bury the ANTHONY TRAN post that Kim might miss it. Kim just can't delete the post of ANTHONY TRAN, the whole thread has to go because of the way the website software that links it.

Thats why I suggested Bob repost the thread as this will thread be deleted to remove the ANTHONY TRAN post.
