My family has 3 Husqvarna chainsaws, all are 55 Rancher model. We bought them because we thought that Husqvarna is top quality. Wrong!!! The last saw we bought is 1 1/2 years old, still under warranty. The crankcase broke out around one of the front vibration mounts, making it inoperable. Husqvarna will not warranty this, saying that they only warranty "manufacturing defects." What would you call this, if it isn't a defect? They want $200 for a new crankcase, which is 2/3 the price of the saw. We'll never give this company another dime, and you shouldn't either. I expected this saw to last a lifetime, not a year and a half.

Well, I can't blame you for being upset about that chainsaw. I am a part-time landscaper and I have used quite a bit of equipment, and frankly I am disappointed. Much of the new equipment today (mowers, weedeaters etc.) is foreign made and is just too flimsy for heavy duty use. Sometimes it is worth it to go with the top of the line equipment, now matter how small the job is.

I couldn't agree more. I bought a Husky saw. Paid $459.00 for it. It lasted for 1 1/2 years, with very little use. I will never buy another one. I would love to send it back to the company, but I am having trouble getting the shipping address. Anyone out there have it? Please e-mail it to me. Thanks.

Seems like Husky has a hard time with customer service. I can't stand even trying to talk to the head guy hear in Whitehorse- complete know it all a hole!!.The next Husky service center is 1000 km or more away. They cry buy local- I cry back give some service. Don't mind order elsewhere to save talking with this guy. Maybe Husky should do some training in their customer service department. Good tough saws though

Iam glad I came across this posting. My Craftsman 18" consumer saw has performed well at home, the farm and cabin over the past 7 years. I will be
looking at the Husqvarna next time around. I will
be also looking to get away from the consumer saws
and look for more safety assess. such as kick-back
devices.

On Saturday we found the piece that broke out of the saw. it was easy to find now that the snow melted. The broken piece had the chain catcher still attached, and the chain catcher has some cuts in it. Looks like it probably broke due to the chain hitting the chain catcher. I suppose that makes it operator error if the chain had slack? Well, that's the reality of running a chainsaw; the chain will loosen. We check for this every time the saws are started or re-fueled. Should that cause the saw to be destroyed if the chain doe hit the chain catcher? Seems like a poor design to me.

In regard to dealers, when I picked up the saw from the service shop (where it was originally purchased,) they wanted a $20 minimum shop charge for calling Husqvarna to see if it is under warranty. They did no work on the saw, only a phone call. After arguing with them, they decided that I didn't have to pay them. That's great customer service, huh?

Hi Loren,

When I took my Husky in to the dealer they called to tell me it wasn't worth fixing. I went in to buy another, larger one, and was told that it'd cost me $35 to get my old one back even though I was ready to spend $600 for a new saw. After waiting for a couple of customers to come in, I started in with the obscenities, very loudly. Somebody from the office came running out and over-rode the salesman about the $35. I ended up going to another dealer (Stihl) and a buddy thought that $35 was worth the spare parts in my old saw.

As several others have pointed out, the dealer is not a small part of a saw purchase. But I haven't taken my Stihl back for the last 5 years. Better luck next time.

Loren- I was a Husky mechanic for a few years. There is not a better saw made, bar none! Jonsered is the same motor, (both owned by Electrolux, the vaccum compaany), and Stihl is pretty good too, along with Dolamr. But, Husky is tops. That being said, the Rancher model is a "consumer saw", not a pro model. We always had more problems with the little saws than the pro model 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 cubic inch saws. I can't say why your saw broke, I've seen dozens broken at every possible place, but anything can happen. Try a different dealer and look for a used crankcase. Don't give up on Husky.

IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ANYONE , ANY CHAINSAWS , YOU GET BAD APPLE OUT OF ALL GOOD ONES! ALL MY BUDDIES HAS STIHL 029 026 036 ALL KINDS OF SIZED , THEY WERE HAPPY WITH IT, SO I BROUGHT STIHL 029 "FARM BOSS" ABOUT 320 BUCKS, ONLY HAD IT FOR A YEAR AND 2 MONTHS , IT STOPPED OILED AND BURNED UP THE ALL THE PARTS SO I TOOK IT BACK BUT MY ONE YEAR WARRANTY WAS ALREADY EXPIRED. I WASNT TOO HAPPY WHEN I WAS ON THE PHONE, NEXT DAY I WENT TO PICK MY OLD ONE UP AND LEAVE BUT THEY GAVE ME BRAND NEW ONE EXACTLY WHAT I HAD AND IT COSTED ME $0! IM ALL HAPPY ALL OVER AGAIN...

I have had 2 Husky saws and loved both of them . The first one was a 50 and I had it for at least 10 trouble free years until it was stolen . I replaced it with a 55 and it has been flawless . My Dad has a 350 and it too is superb .

Loren, Sorry to hear about your saw. I own two model 61,s a 266 and two 50,s and few of there weed eaters and a model 40, they are all good saws. I would guess that your chain had loosened up and came off and caused that problem. You say not to buy a Husqvarna, tho I think that you need to get a dealer rep to look at it. If your dealer will not get a rep to look at it then its time for a new dealer. they are truely a great saw

I have always found Husqvarna to be the best chainsaw I have ever used. They beat out Stihl and Johnsared in my opinion. You say you have three, one broke, then you come on a public forum and say they are all no good. I don't quite understand your reasoning. I stand by Husqvarna, I have a Rancher that is 15 years old and will cut like mad with a sharp chain. I do take care of it and maintain it well but it has never failed me.

Husky does not warranty abuse, handles are on saws to hold. Pulling, tugging, etc is not why they are there. Replace the operator not the saw- all equiment will fail when abused.

The saw wasn't abused. We know how to run chainsaws properly to prevent pinching, etc., and my dad has been using them for 40 years and never had one break until now. If it's a matter of replacing the operator, come on over to our farm this fall and show us how it's done.

I am new here, so forgive the intrusion. I am searching for help to know what chain to order for my Husky 45. I have no manual with the saw and the nearest dealer is 140 miles away. It's 16 inch, and the old chain has 33 written on each link.

I also have a second request. Has anyone had problems with a 21 inch Makita chain saw vapor locking. I bought this piece of junk new, and every time I saw for fifteen minutes it vapor locks and won't run until it's cool again.

Any comments will be appreciated.

Check the Oregon chain site. They'll have a 16" chain to fit your Husky.

I have a smaller (model 40) Husky, and I love it! It's not given me a moments worth of problems since I bought it seven years ago. I think every machinery manufacturer has SOMEONE who would speak ill of them, someone who's gotten a 'lemon' at some time or another. It's just too bad that they didn't treat you better.

Sorry.

Well,
I had similar problems with Stihl, and got sick and tired of all of Stihls excuses!! Stihl is liveing on their PAST reputation!! Every time i had an engine problem I'd have to "prove" to them i was useing fresh premium gas, and "their oil". When the electrical system quit, it would be my fault again..... After several loggers around here told me to trade "up" to Husqvarna, i did!! Now i have all Husky, (four of them) and all have run perfectly since day one!!

You have 3 saws and a problem with one, that's a better average than i had with Stihl!!!

----- -->I'll NEVER go back to Stihl!!!<----- --

BTW, i saw a guy run a Husky over with a one ton pick up loaded with fire wood, and although it broke the handle ect., the saw started right up and was usable!!! The case never broke!

The Rancher is a good saw, you just happen to get "one" with a problem, and it's too bad it soured you on the whole line. What does Husky say is the reason the saw broke????? ??

i sure gotta agree with you about the Stihl chainsaw. pure junk. been through several major starting problems before my dealer finially replaced the entire starting head assembly. but it still won't start on the 1st pull or even the 7th one. usually takes about 8-10 pulls to get it going and then it sounds like a thrashing machine when idling. heck, my poulan lasted over 20 years and never a problem like that. sure wish i would not have traded it off now. won't do that one again, at least not for another stihl. never had a "husky", but always heard good reports about them. don't seem to be any dealers close to me either. with my luck i need a dealer close. LOL

yep, I have a Stihl 028 and it is a ritual trying to get that thing to run everytime. I use fresh gas, their oil, and even the gas conditioner.

next saw, husky.

Well, my experience is just the opposite. After I got rid of my VERY finicky Husky 50 I got a non-pro Stihl that's been completely trouble-free, even after the help left it in my loader bucket without telling me. Got chewed up when I pushed 100 yds of road, but all it needed was some new plastic and a good cleaning. Two bars, maybe 20 chains, and it has yet to see a repair shop. I'm sold.

The casting broke underneath the vibration mount behind the bar. Husqvarna says that it must have broke by something we did, like being dropped. They say they've never seen one break in this spot, so it can't be a manufacturing defect (although they haven't actually seen the saw, just heard the dealer serviceman's description of the break.) My dad is always very careful handling & storing chainsaws. Where the casting broke, the aluminum extends outward from the crankcase and is only about 3/16" thick, so I can see where that would be a weak point. That side of the crankcase is protected by the chain brake housing, so I would think it would be difficult to damage.

My Dad always bought McCulloughs before this saw, and never broke any of those, so he was reluctant to switch over to the Husky that I bought him anyway, so he really hadn't used it much yet. I bought him the Husky because of the anti-vib, lighter weight, etc., since I really liked mine that I've had for 4 years. My brother-in-law also bought one. We use the saws a lot in the fall; last fall we cut about 10 hay racks of wood. It's kind of embarrassing to tell my dad that I need to spend $200 to fix his $300 chainsaw I bought him, when he really prefers running the $80 McCulloughs anyway. It think I'm going to take the crankcase apart and try to TIG weld a new piece of plate in where it broke.

Don't try to fix it yourself. First, I'd find another Husky dealer!! Sounds to me like the ppl you're working with aren't bucking for YOU! The MFG doesn't have time to deal with these issues, that's why they have dealers to do it for them. Most all retail warrenty items are delt with in this manner.

Tell your dealer to take a hike. Find someone that will provide you with real coustomer service.

If you try to fix it, the mfg then has the perfect right to say no to fixing your warrenty item. I'd not give them that chance.

Tig welding might not work anyway. most saw castings are not aluminum but zinc or magnisium or some other odd alloy. Not sure how they would weld.

I can understand your frustration.

If they say they have never seen one break at that point, it would seem to me that is admiting that it _was_ a manufaturing defect.

If they had _many_ break at that point, it would be a design defect.

If they had some break, but from twisting or other abuse, then they would be right to blame 'you'.

However, to state that none have broken there is pretty much admitting that something went wrong on this one saw during manufature to make it waeker than any other saw they produced.

Hopefull the husky will last till I cant pick the dam thing up anymore haha.

Hi. There are so many different factors that the operatior is responsible for if a chainsaw is to last. I have used a Husky 51 for twelve years. I have replaced the piston twice but I know for a fact that the problem was operator error both times. An excelent saw but time to replace it. Does anyone have an opinion of the 350 verse the 455. The 455 has current technology engine and is more powerfull but weights more. Is the increase in weight a problem. Cheers
