I work for a company that has 60+ shindaiwa 230's (yes 60+). I do most of the repairs on all our equipment, and would highly recommend this machine. They get beat up and abused and are mechanically bulletproof. I am frequently replacing air filter housings because they are thrown into the backs of trucks and roll around back there. but they ALWAYS start. I bought one for myself 3 years ago.

The best weed eater on the market in my opinion is the Echo SRM 2100. It's lightweight, easy to handle, and has enough power for really thick grass. I have had mine for five years and used it commercially, the only problem I have had with it was a small grease leak up by the top of the shaft though.

The new TroyBuilts have 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines. I bought a 2 stroker and my neighbor bought the 4 stroke. They both run great and seem to be well built. Lowes carries them now and they are in the $200 range.

Two quarter horses or 3 1/2 goats..... I've got a Homelite hanging in a shed that runs great and has been used very little.....I'd give it to you if you came over and picked it up..... ...noisy, vibratin', consarned invention of the devil that it is....I think I will convert it into an outboard motor for a boat anchor one of these days..... only internal combustion device I ever met that I wanted to shoot.

Redmax. Thats what 80% of the comercial guys around here use. Weighs 10 lbs, lightest weedeater around; Kawasaki's are 9 lbs but gotta drive to NY to get to a dealer. We've tried stihl's, siezed brand new ones up in an 8 hr day of trimming tombstones. We used to use green Machines, but then they went out of business, then got bought out by JD/Homelite or whatever. Bought a few Redmax's, havent looked back

Stihl, no doubt, hands down. For the best service and virtually no trouble this would be your best bet. Have an FS-86 that will be 10 years old next month. It's predicessor was a 1981 model FS-81. Replaced the FS-81 with the FS-86 in 1993. We handle all kinds of brush/grass as well as trimming the yard. Yes, a Stihl is not cheap. I would think you want to buy one that will last. If that is the case, check out he Stihl website (www.stihlusa.com), select one that will fit your usage profile, and happy cutting!

the one I got goes like a sum0gun, it is just what I wanted , given that I had to allow for some weaknesses that I was willing to put up with. But it's strong points make up for all of that for me considering my specific uses. Course I have only personaly owned 4 or 5. I aint tellin the brand.

It depends on what you're going to do with it. For light grass trimming, they're all pretty good. For heavy brush cutting, you need a trimmer with a solid shaft. Most of the cheaper cutters, even those with straight shafts, use flexible drive shafts.

I've been very happy with my Stihl FS85, and I've done some very heavy brush cutting over the past several years. I notice that the commercial boys use Shindaiwa almost exclusively.

My vote goes to Stihl. I've got an FS 120 that is great. It will power through anything. I've used the brush blades to help clean out fence rows, and it really works well. I really like my Stihl.

I have WEEDEATER brand. Bought it at Wal-Mart. I'm on the second one. Used the first one 17 years and then threw it away. Great around the home as I trim around house, 40 trees, sidewalk, and driveway.---deadeye

Shindawa for a commercial machine and Craftsman for a homeowner machine.

I'd say it depends on what you are going to do with it. Do you need just string or will you use a blade at times. Some of the really cheap ones are "best" because they are basically free after the warranty period. I use a $69 Mac around the house that will still last several years. At the farm I have an old 350G John Deere with a blade- it was expensive in 1988 but it doesn't owe me anything either, still running strong.

for the money, Ryobi gets my vote. At $69-79 retail I put Shakespere .080 mean string in it, beat up on it for two seasons (first being under warranty), and throw it away. Make sure you get the 31 cc model with the head you can reload without taking it off. I just measure out 24 feet, feed both ends into seperate holes, rewind the head backwards until the loop gets there, cut and bump and go. While I'd like to try a Stihl or better, can't bring myself to part with that kind of money.

Nothing wrong with Echo either. Tanaka and Shindawa are good brands too, but a little harder to find.

I'll second tanaka . I bought one for my business and it's out performed stihl and toro and homelite in my business. It's self feeding head has really sped up my trimming time. I'd put it up against a stihl anyday.

I have an echo. Best weed eater I've ever seen or used. I guess sthil would be my second choice. Either one of these brands. I have really worked the heck out of my echo. Anything from grass , tough weeds , to trees. Always starts great. Never had a problem with it. After about 10 years of very hard use , I thought maybe I would change the spark plug. I pulled the plug out , and it still looked like new. Now , I'm talking about many , many hard hours on this machine. I put the plug back in. Still useing it to this day. I never replaced a thing on this echo wead eater. It is about 13 years old now. Performs like the day I bought it.

Hi Kevin, I think "Stihl" is the best!, so does "Customer's guide", you can't go wrong on the whole line of equipment.
